We recently had the chance to connect with Chef Sultan Karriem and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chef Sultan, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
What brings me joy outside of work is mentoring, providing meals for families, and giving back to the community by volunteering. My goal in life is to always be a blessing to others! Currently we are working on several major collaborations with plans for expansion.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Chef Karriem’s story is one of grit, growth, and gourmet excellence. Our brand isn’t just about catering—it’s about crafting moments that linger long after the last bite. “The Chef Karriem Experience”, is one that involves customization, attention to detail an excellence!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My father, mother, grandmother and coaches taught me at an early age the value of work and doing for self. They had me and my brothers’ selling papers, cutting yards, selling lemonade and going door to door asking if anyone needed help with anything. At first, I was fussing about the assignment, but I soon learned that working and doing for self has many benefits. And the greatest one is being able create your own opportunities, based on the effort you are willing to put in.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
Throughout my journey as a successful entrepreneur, there are always thoughts about how to scale and grow. So, the opportunity to open a restaurant was presented to me in a way that all I needed to do was go pick up the keys. I changed my mind because a restaurant was not in my plans. I love being able to cater to different groups with different menus and locations.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I ‘ve been currently committed to pitching my business, my services and my offerings to a company for over 7 months and by grace, I was place into a position to cook for every Senior Executive of this corporation that has over 1500 locations. The Executives were all in the same room at the same time and it paid off big, with a roaring standing ovation and a new partnership on the table.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When have you had to bet the company?
I have to bet on myself and my company every day! No matter how many awards or recognition, you have to always be prepared to show up and show out when given the opportunity to showcase your skills and talents. And to be honest, it’s bigger that betting on yourself, I would label it as believing in yourself because failure is never an option.
