We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dan Pohl. Check out our conversation below.
Dan, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A typical day for me usually starts with Bible reading and prayer time. I look forward to this time and soak up all the strength, wisdom, patience, and peace that I need for the day from my time with God. Then depending on the day, I’m either hitting the studio right away for work or helping my 2 boys get started with their homeschool work. In the studio, I’m preparing for any sessions that I have with clients that day or tracking parts on my own to send to clients.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dan Pohl and I produce and record music out of my full-production studio, which I call The Barn Studio. I work with clients in-person at the studio, and also remotely if distance is an issue. I work with several different genres of music, and often find myself working in the world of pop, singer/songwriter, country, worship, and whatever else my clients need.
I pride myself in deeply caring about my artists and the music they make. I love being in the support role and helping them turn their vision into a professional, high quality product that can be shared with the world. Musicians are very creative people, but sometimes lack the knowledge or expertise to push their art past the finish line. This is my sweet spot!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I believe that people and relationships are absolutely essential in living a fulfilled, purposeful life. Bonds can be broken between people when there is mistrust, and I encounter many musicians who have been hurt by previous producers or studios. I love to show them that the music making process can be fun and life-giving, and when there is trust between an artist and producer, some real magic happens! I have no interest in over-charging people, or forcing my own ideas over theirs, and I’d like to think that trust can be felt in the music that we make.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
When I was younger, I thought that my creativity or songs needed to be “better” before I shared it with people. Now, I would tell my younger self to embrace the stage of life that you’re in and that sharing your creativity is a tremendous step forward to getting it where you want it to be. The more you use that side of yourself, the more comfortable you will become in it.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes!! I think that having confidence in who you are, and being that person all the time brings about the most genuine relationships. I want artists to choose to work with me because they value who I am as a person, not just the work I provide. I am extremely open about how I work and what I believe and think that I am right where I’m supposed to be!
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I don’t care if music is ever brought up about me. I hope that people talk about how I loved my wife and raised my boys to love God and people. This is a big change than if I was asked this question in my 20’s. I used to think that being a musician was my identity and purpose, but I realized that has no lasting impact and is ultimately an un-fulfilling way for me to live.
