Meet Eric Jara

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eric Jara. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Eric, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

I think by example. I’ve been blessed with A LOT of people who have helped me in many aspects of life, and I think I just do as I’m taught, you know? Because I’ve been shown so much love and support, I do it naturally I guess because that’s mostly all I’ve seen. Now, I’m not perfect, and I’m not the most generous person I know that, but I do try and do what I can because I know what people have done for me. So now if I’m in a position to help others in any way, I most definitely will. Which I lowkey think should be normal, no? Like it’s not hard to show love, support, and help out like… it’s not rocket science haha. I don’t think there’s a single person who’s ever accomplished anything, who has done it alone. If there was someone to help us, why wouldn’t we also help those who are next?

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m blessed to say that I’m involved in quite a few things. Professionally, I own a construction company, I’m co-director of Allegiant Dance Crew, and I’m on the board of advisors for the First Ascent Scholarship at the University of Utah. Personally, I’m a part time actor, author, professional wrestler, rapper, and youtuber. And I say part time because these things aren’t always in my day to day, but when I’m in it, I’m all in. When I get acting gigs, when I am in the studio, when I am training for wrestling shows, when I do make videos, I do go all in and do what I can to give my best work. So I might be part-timing all my artistic and fun outlets, but I’ve been blessed to have done as much as I have so far in each field. Going back to my “work work”, the construction company, the dance crew, and the scholarship. I’m privileged to say I get to do what I want to do, I get to help people, and I get to be a mentor in many ways. It’s a fulfilling professional life, I feel. At least to me, it’s what makes sense.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think the greatest skill/ability that’s helped me has been my attitude. Life ain’t always easy, but if I can find the best in every situation it makes life slightly easier. I think there’s value in being able to stay positive regardless of how negative things can get. I also think empathy helps a ton! Dealing with people who scream, or get angry easily is a lot easier when I think about what they’ve gone through. It helps me have patience with people and not let others’ emotions affect mine. I’ll be honest, I don’t think there’s anything that I’m an expert in. Knowledge wise, I’m not sure what’s helped me haha. I’m not super good at anything. I just do things as best as I can and take everything as a learning experience.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Easy. I stop completely for a while. Again, I’m blessed to be involved in so much, but sometimes it does become a bit too much to where I get super drained. What usually helps me is taking a break. Sounds dumb right? But legit, I’ve never really known what a “break” was until my body and mind just shut down and force me to take a break. So now, my mindset is on “I should take more strategic breaks, before my body and mind break because at that point I can’t even be productive”. So strategic breaks help me a lot. What I mean by strategic, is like maybe one day a month, I plan to not do anything at all. Nothing work related at least. And whether I “feel” like taking a break or not, I try and force myself to. That way I’m good to continue. I mean, I try. I don’t think I’ve had a break in a few months now haha. But I do try. When it comes to giving advice to others about this, I’d say, try something. Too many people look for advice and strategies for this and that, which is good, but at the end of the day, nothing works if we don’t act. So I say, ACT. Do something. Don’t learn about something more than you try something. Cuz information is out there. Strategies for being overwhelmed are everywhere. But the point is to try and see what works for you and what doesn’t. Try and see if it works. Try taking a break and see if it works. Try meditation or something and see if it works. Try picking up a new hobby to see if it works. Try doing nothing, try doing everything, whatever it is, but TRY!
