Emma Marchione shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Emma, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
The thing that makes me lose track of time and find myself again would be music. There is nothing like a good playlist, in my opinion.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Emma Marchione. I am the owner of Star Crossed Weddings as well as Star Crossed Magazine. With Star Crossed Weddings, I specialize in wedding and elopement photography. My heart has always been in capturing love in its most authentic form. I like my sessions to be intimate and romantic– real and fun. With Star Crossed Magazine, I wanted a space where all photographers are welcome. From hobbyists to professionals, anyone can submit their work and have it showcased. As wedding season is starting to slow down, I am focusing more on my magazine. I hope to grow and reach more creatives in the industry.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
To be candid, I try not to be so guarded. I grew up very cynical of others and didn’t trust their intentions. My hard exterior kept me protected; however, it also alienated me from people and opportunities. I’m learning to let my guard down more and to be more approachable.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been many moments in my life where I wanted to give up. Recently, I wanted to give up my business and magazine. I know, crazy. 5 years of hard work and I was ready to throw it all away. I was in a dark place: struggling with medical bills and health issues. I felt as though I couldn’t keep up with my work– that I would never be who I was before. I cried a lot. I missed “her”– the old me. After almost a year on my medications and therapy, I am doing better. Both mentally and physically. I still struggle from time to time, but I feel more fire in my heart now.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is not the real me. It is a tiny glimpse into my life. On the internet, I come off as confident and charming. But in reality, I struggle hard with Imposter Syndrome. I am shy and sometimes I think people mistake that for ego. I think everyone, including myself, have an image of themselves on social media. We tend to post our highlights and not our B-roll.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I don’t think that most people understand the fragility of life. As people, we are ever evolving. We get older, we change, we lose people, our health deteriorates. As a photographer, I know the importance of capturing a moment in time. Immortalizing a feeling, a memory, a fleeting ghost of a life.
