Story & Lesson Highlights with Karissa Burkee of Columbia

We recently had the chance to connect with Karissa Burkee and have shared our conversation below.

Karissa, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I started playing pickleball in the last year and I absolutely love it! It’s been such a great way to make new friends and connect with other business owners. I’m usually laughing at myself the majority of the time, but that’s part of the fun!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Karissa, owner and bridal hairstylist of k.b. glam, specializing in soft, romantic, and timeless styles that last through every moment of a wedding day. I’ve been in the industry for 13 years, and what I love most is creating an experience that feels calming, organized, and fun for brides and their bridal parties.

My brand is built around connection — really listening to each bride, understanding her vision, and translating it into a look that feels effortlessly like herself. I pride myself on bringing both professionalism and a warm, reassuring presence to wedding mornings.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to help every bride feel confident, beautiful, and genuinely cared for on one of the biggest days of her life.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I remember one of my favorite instructors from cosmetology school would always share life wisdom while we would be practicing hair cuts. Her advice was always simple, but profound to me. I admired her for how she built her business with such passion. I’ve heard it said so many times, but when she would say this line, it always meant something different to me because she was living it out. “Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You don’t have to dim your own light to make everyone else comfortable. Growing up, I was such a people pleaser — always trying to meet everyone’s expectations, always trying to keep the peace and be agreeable.

Over time, I’ve learned that kindness doesn’t mean sacrificing your own voice. You can be thoughtful and generous while still honoring your own boundaries and dreams. I’ve gained the confidence in knowing that my worth doesn’t come from other’s feelings.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My faith, family, and showing up for people with a loyal, genuine heart. As a mom, my two kids are the center of my world, and they motivate everything I do. My relationship with God guides my decisions and keeps me grounded during the chaos of juggling everything in life. They would probably also say that I’m the friend who will pray for you, cheer you on, and show up for you when you need someone most.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I absolutely feel like I’m doing what I was born to do. I remember thinking it was such a far fetched dream to just do bridal hair, but I continued to follow where my passion was. Bridal hairstyling blends everything that feels natural to me: creativity, positivity, serving others in a meaningful way, and helping women feel their most confident. It’s work that gives me purpose and feels aligned with who God created me to be. I’m not following what I was told to do, I’m living out what I was truly made for.
