Story & Lesson Highlights with Cristal Ortiz

We recently had the chance to connect with Cristal Ortiz and have shared our conversation below.

Cristal, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I am currently working on a postcard collection of places I have visited! It is something that I haven’t yet shown to anyone!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Cristal Ortiz, a Duke Alum. I recently graduated from Duke in Spring 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience degree and a Chemistry minor. I am currently the creator behind cristal._.ortiz in where I share snippets of my life: mostly of clothing, cooking, and my lifestyle.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I don’t know how to pronounce Giraffe. Growing up, I was obsessed with reading. I learned English at age 6. I was born in the United States, but grew up in a Mexican household that spoke solely Spanish. I picked up reading in English since, to me, it was so much easier to do than speak. It is my earliest memory of feeling powerful. Power in knowing a reading, and being able to gain knowledge from it. When I did not know a word, I made up a pronunciation and kept going. Til this day, at my age of 22, I do not know how to pronounce jr·af; instead, I say geer-ah-fe.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
My aspirations are molded by the people around me, inspired by community and by individuals who strive to succeed via resilience. I can not remember a specific time, I almost gave up, but in times of tribulation, I think it is best to rely on the support of the community.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The version I have on my Instagram is just snippets of my life. I would like to say that my family and friends who are close to me know who I am.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I aspire to be remembered as someone who dedicated their life to serving and helping others.
