Camille Todaro of Dallas on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Camille Todaro shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Camille , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Our miscarriage care package has been popular lately. While it’s a sad event, I’m happy that my product brings joy to women who have experienced such a loss.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Camille. I started my small business shortly after COVID-19. Having worked in the copywriting and media space for over 10 years, I’ve always had a knack for words. I married that to my love for candles, and wanted to create a clean burning, humorous gift that was unlike other candles on the market. My candles poke fun at the existential humor of life and say what you’re thinking, whether it’s a breakup, a job you hate or that hot dad you see at the gym. We’ve got something for whatever mood you’re in.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I’ve been laid off a few times in the corporate world. And every time, my business has saved me.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I’ve always taken my frustration and used it to propel me forward. I’m not one to brood and play the victim card.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
That a 9-5 is a secure means of income. I think there’s nothing riskier than putting all your eggs in one basket. For me, it’s about control; I don’t want to be at the mercy of some company. I’ve never bought into that “family” feeling at a job. A company is only concerned about their bottom line, and you are disposable. When you own your own business, you have complete control, not someone else.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
After a productive day, just hanging with my dog.
