An Inspired Chat with Anisha Thomas

Anisha Thomas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Anisha, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I am walking a path, although sometimes the path doesn’t always seem clear or you think the path leads somewhere but there’s an unexpected twist. One thing that continually revisits me, is having faith and trusting that the universe has your back – no matter what turn takes place and how turbulent or uncertain things may seem. It can be easier said than done, and it does require you to discern when making decisions.

We may be walking a path, but we are also creating it. Remembering and continually drawing back to our own power is how we create the path we walk.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As a composer, music producer, and pianist my work spans across film, television, immersive technology, and live performance. I’m currently creating music for a new app — a project I’m genuinely excited about!

In 2017, I founded Sound-how, a music and sound expertise platform dedicated to supporting women, gender-diverse individuals, marginalised minorities, and under-represented creatives across the industry. Alongside this, I work as an educator and keynote speaker, advocating for equitable, inclusive, and innovative pathways in music, film, and technology.

Sound-how offers online coaching/career-accelerator programs, consultation services, and a range of free resources, all accessible through our website and social media channels.

I’ll soon be releasing a new e-book through Sound-how titled ‘How Much Do I Charge? A Comprehensive Guide for Composers’. Stay updated on the release via our social media and e-newsletter.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was discovering that composing music could actually be a real career—something I could pursue further. This feeling was solidified when I was accepted into my dream school to study music, majoring in composition. It was the first time I felt that my dreams and inspirations were truly possible.

From childhood, I had always wanted to pursue a career in music. I was naturally drawn to creating things, which made the path of becoming a composer feel intuitive. However, my piano teacher at the time did not support me. I received very traditional music training during the first 12 years of my musical journey, and because of this, I didn’t realise how many different avenues one could take in the pursuit of music. I feel there is still more unfolding here—for myself and for others in my field.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
The one kind and most important thing I would tell my younger self is this—do not let the opinions of others shape how you see yourself. The way people see and treat you is a reflection of them, not you. The potential others believe you have is often only the potential they see in themselves.

Only you get to decide who you want to be—and that holds more power than you realise.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
There are many lies told to our industry, but one commonly told to composers is that we need to work for free in order to build our connections and portfolio. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, devaluing your music can cause significant harm—even in the early stages of your career. Despite looming AI fears and industry pressures, composers at all levels need to prioritise understanding their business model, which includes knowing how to appropriately price and charge for their work.

It is why I decided to write an e-book about it for composers.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What light inside you have you been dimming?
The light that I have been dimming is speaking up and not being afraid to speak my truth! It feels almost ironic, given my line of work. However, I feel even more so drawn to make this a priority, especially with my upcoming projects.
