Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sonya Jacobs of Frisco/McKinney

We recently had the chance to connect with Sonya Jacobs and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Sonya , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have recently fallen in love with listening to and identifying birds! There are so many different varieties that live near me and find great joy using my app and learning about the beauty all around me. I didn’t know that a bird has a song sound and a call sound and my Merlin app is teaching me so much!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sonya Jacobs I am a counselor, speaker, pastor, wife and mother. I work at a church and do counseling there as well as create environments for couples to work on their marriages. I am also the co-founder of a non-profit that I adore and I am passionate about called Enjoy Your Marriage. Marriage is a beautiful institution and when a marriage is healthy, it can be one of the greatest joys of a persons life but that takes intentional investment and many people need marriage education to learn how to create that – it doesn’t just happen because two people are in love. I help people create healthy, flourishing marriages.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I grew up in the deep south and when I was a child, I believed that only men were allowed to be pastors and women were not allowed to serve their communities in that role. I know now that is not the case at all! Women have been serving in Jewish and Christian communities in beautiful ways as shepherds, leaders, pastors, deacons and more since the beginning.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I went to see a counselor for the first time when I was in my early thirties and that experience changed my life and ultimately inspired me to go to graduate school to get my masters degree in counseling. Having someone truly listen to you not tot judge or fix you but to help you understand yourself and the relationships that you are in is a beautiful, healing and growing experience.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am committed to my mission for life. I believe that emotionally healthy people can create healthy marriages that will create flourishing families which help develop thriving communities. I will pour into those different categories in whatever ways that I can for the rest of my life.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I think about legacy a lot. I am often sitting with couples and individuals asking them to cast a vision for their own lives in light of what kind of legacy they want to leave so it would be hypocritical and foolish if I don’t do that for myself! I hope when the time comes and I am gone, the stories that people tell about me are ones filled with love, grace, kindness and wisdom. I am doing my best to live an intentional life, a life without regrets and a life that brings value to those around me.
