We’re looking forward to introducing you to Phyllis Pollema-Cahill. Check out our conversation below.
Phyllis, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day is first answering email, then time in my studio with breaks for meals and exercise. Hopefully most of the day I can work on jewelry, though there are hours or days where errands, appointments, etc. take my time.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I make jewelry from polymer clay and sometimes metal, such as sterling silver or copper. Polymer clay is very versatile and lightweight, so it’s great for earrings.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I worked as a graphic artist and illustrator for many years before making jewelry. This taught me self-motivation, attention to detail and how to create a quality product. My employers and clients expected excellence and I delivered.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I gave up graphic art for illustration because it was something I always wanted to do and I had the opportunity to go to art school. I gave up illustration for jewelry making because the illustration market dried up. I’ve always been an artist, just in different fields. It’s important to be flexible and resilient.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
There are many artists, both living and dead, that I admire and continue to learn from. Jewelry artists, fine artists, graphic artists, illustrators… all have something to offer. Art is art, regardless of medium.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. Validation by others is nice, but I’m the person I need to please and I’m a demanding customer.
