Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Anthony Scarzafava & Frank Rocco & James Cipollone of Lower East Side

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Anthony Scarzafava & Frank Rocco & James Cipollone. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Anthony & Frank & James, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Intelligence and energy though critical are empty without integrity. Part of the reason the three of us have decide to do work together is a mutual respect and trust for each other. which we have built over decades.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Terminal Art Works is a collaboration between three artists, Anthony Scarzafava, Frank Rocco and James Cipollone. We work together in mixed media, collage, found images, the detritus of everyday life, shredded personal papers, news articles, etc. An artist in the group may start a piece and it can be finished by anyone of us, it can go back and forth between us until collectively we decide it is finished.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Anthony and James were both studying art at Pratt Institute when they first started defining themselves as artists. They worked together on collage pieces after graduation and had multiple shows over two and half years. While James put down his brushes to concentrate on his career and single-handedly raise a young son after his wife suddenly passed away, Anthony continued prolifically producing art throughout the years and has had over ten solo shows of his paintings. Although Frank studied art at Queens College, he pursued his visual art through photography. When James picked up his brushes again three years ago, it spawned this new project with Anthony, Frank and himself called Terminal Art Works.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
As Anthony says we are wrong everyday about things. Its okay, but the key is to go forward regardless, learn from it and be better. everyday.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Social justice is of prime importance to us. It is the wall we are willing to die on. The values we would “go to the mattresses” on include equality, freedom of speech and self expression, respecting diversity, self-determination and opposing oppression in all its forms.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
If your not out of your depth your not doing right. We strongly feel we should constantly be challenging ourselves.
