We’re looking forward to introducing you to Deb Dunn. Check out our conversation below.
Deb, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I’m forever grateful to live within walking distance to water and walking paths.
I often feel that I’m walking a painting and its story into existence. New ideas come to me while taking in the fresh air, sights and sounds. I am in my element with the elements.
And as I walk, I gather. The beach brings finds of driftwood, stones and beach glass while woodland walks hold treasures of twigs and leaves.
Nature’s gifts found on these mindful walks often find themselves on my art table and eventually in my creations be it weavings, mixed media or subjects for paintings.
At one with the earth, tuned into the quietness, a whispering to my soul that speaks volumes.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a self taught, intuitive artist who loves working with and exploring a variety of different mediums. I paint in a whimsical, spiritual surrealism style. The seasons, folklore, water, trees, nature and our interconnectedness to it all strongly influences my work. Subjects range from birds and nests to wise instinctual women.
I also love to write and I begin each painting with writing my thoughts on canvas or paper.
In a way, painting is just another way of telling my stories. Layer upon layer, the words, emotions and story is captured in brushstrokes. An invitation to pause and reflect.
My paintings, illustrations, photography, fibre arts and writing have been featured in nationwide publications. I have been the cover artist for The country register newspaper of Michigan and Ontario, the premiere issue of The coloring studio and C.D. cover artist for the musical duo Sweetbird.
Most recently I collaborated with my daughter Kate illustrating her debut children’s book “ Dreaming of Dresses”.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I’ve always had a deep connection and respect for animals and nature.
Observing and curious to learn more, my love of being in nature has always led me to reading about birds and wildlife, their nesting and diet habits, trees, vegetation, and living a nature based lifestyle.
It has encouraged my interest in exploring and discovering new places as well as photography.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If it’s something you really want , take chances….. you never know if you don’t try. Instead of keeping all those ideas inside, it’s good to step outside of your comfort zone and try. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Once upon a time I would have said social stereotypes . That age and ageism was a factor in limiting exposure and opportunities.
I think there’s been a shift and definite confidence in older artists putting themselves and their work out into the world.
Being in my late 60’s and illustrating my daughter’s children’s book “ Dreaming of Dresses” has been empowering!
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
I’d rather replace/ redirect any feelings of regret with positive action.
