Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Durk McGurk

We recently had the chance to connect with Durk McGurk and have shared our conversation below.

Durk, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
Every time I go to a new city and just explore by foot is when I feel the most joy. I take photos. I get inspired.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an artist. I paint murals for a living. I’ve been an artist my entire life. I travel, paint and live my dream everyday.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My very first mural project that started my entire career just fell in my lap. My friend Chris worked at a restaurant that needed a mural. He told him I could do it. I had never painted a mural.

I was completely terrified, but he believed in me and was an advocate for me with the restaurant manager.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think if I instant instantaneously got work painting murals without putting myself out there I never would’ve understood the hustle behind everything.

You really have to seek out gigs when you’re making a living off creative work.

I wonder if some people don’t have to hustle and send cold emails and such. I like it though. It’s like being in control of the game.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think people outside of the creative industry think you have to be especially talented to make it in the creative industry.

You don’t.

There’s poor taste everywhere. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would build a commune inside of an airplane hanger or a giant building with tons of foliage and art and things to skate.
