An Inspired Chat with Leisel Strickler of Richmond, Virginia

We recently had the chance to connect with Leisel Strickler and have shared our conversation below.

Leisel , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Woodworking! Specifically, carving. It allows me to be completely immersed in the creative experience; from drawing the design to carving it out and making the finishing touches, it is truly peaceful.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Leisel Strickler and I am a woodworker based outside of Richmond, Virginia. I started woodworking several years ago, and built mug racks, cutting boards, etc. My focus turned to carving a a few years ago, and that is where I find myself most drawn to now. From coffee scoops to stirring spoons, I love that every design is handcrafted and unique.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Art. Creating and crafting whether it is through painting, design, building etc, has the ability to connect us all. Art is all about how we feel, what we’re making. At our core, we are all creative. Creating is a unifying experience.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
We all suffer in different ways. I have struggled with an autoimmune disease since I was a teenager. At times, it has left me frustrated that I have to rest or can’t work as fast as others. Woodworking has really allowed me to tap into my patience. Beautiful pieces can still be made, even if they are made slower. There is beauty in making something despite being in pain. In seeing your limitations, and meeting yourself where you’re at, and working with yourself, not against.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think there’s a common misconception that if you are a woodworker you have to stay within your niche. I don’t believe that; I have tried all kinds of woodworking. From building furniture and making cutting boards, to learning how to carve, I have gained so much knowledge from each niche. Life is too short to try just one avenue of creating. If you are interested in something, try it!

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Carving. Nothing compares to seeing a piece take shape right at your fingertips.
