Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Henderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melissa, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding purpose in life can be challenging at times. I’ve often thought I was making the best decisions, only to find out later that my choices were wrong. Thankfully, I’ve learned to pray first. On the front of my home computer, I have a sticky note that states in bold letters “PRAY FIRST”.
My purpose has changed over the years because of life experiences. When our son was in school, I decided to volunteer for various school activities. That gave me purpose and allowed me to learn more about his school. Volunteering turned into full time employment at the school. That was my purpose at that time in my life. Helping children learn and feel loved.
Another time in my life, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation, and other treatments for the cancer allowed my husband and I to find a new purpose. We started a cancer support group at our church.
Now, as I grow older, my purpose changes again. I’m a “Mimi” to two wonderful grandchildren. I love sharing time with the grands.
Also, I’ve always helped with “older” folks and now I am an “older” person. Older only in age, not in my heart. My purpose is found in sharing God’s love with people of every age.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m pleased to share that I’m an author of inspirational messages sometimes humming with humor. I’m one of those authors who doesn’t stick to one genre. I write children’s stories, inspirational fiction, and non-fiction. I enjoy sharing stories of faith, family, and laughter. Our family motto is “It’s Always A Story with the Henderson’s”. We’re blessed to be able to laugh at ourselves.
I like to write every day. Whether a few sentences or a few chapters, writing bring me peace.
My ideas for my writing comes from every day experiences. Grandchildren Rowan and Eden provide many ideas for stories.
I’m thankful to share my writing in many online and in-print publications.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that were most impactful in my writing journey are patience, dedication, and faith. Don’t let negative thoughts intrude on your path to fulfill a desire. Have patience and know that God’s timing is always best. Stick to a plan, but be ready to go a different direction if needed. Give yourself grace.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I believe everyone has times of feeling overwhelmed. When I feel overwhelmed and burdened due to deadlines, health issues, frustration, or some other reason, I try to remember to pause and pray. Take a breath, walk away from the computer or phone, look outside and take in the glory of nature. A few moments of quiet and sharing in prayer relaxes the body and refreshes me to continue with my projects.
