We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dante Fleming a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dante, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found out my purpose since I was young and was always inspired by superheroes growing up. That purpose to this day is to give hope to humanity. So, day by day, I give generosity and kindness to people not only out of my own kindness, but to give people hope that there is still good in the world. And, I could give hope to the world with a camera in one hand and a pen in the other, creating stories for people to believe in humanity and good in the world, to create bridges across communities, to touch hearts, and build a connection through vision. Tupac once said “I can’t change the world, but I can spark the brain that will change the world. And that’s our job.”

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Dante Fleming. I am a filmmaker and actor. I’ve always wanted to be an actor since I was 6, inspired from movies like Spider-Man (2002), Karate Kid, Chronicle, etc. I started taking acting classes since I was 13 and started creating skits that same age. That’s where content creating and filmmaking became the seeds that planted in my head to hone that craft and get noticed. Throughout the years, I did everything I could to get noticed and get in the industry. I quitted in 2020 due to covid and burnout. But, when I got discovered and was doing music videos and videography in 2022 with that camera in my hand, that love for filmmaking slowly came back. Later in 2023, that’s where I decided to go to film school and really pursue the career I’ve wanted since I was a kid. I graduated in 2024 of March and was immersing myself in film and production, constantly learning and improving the craft to better my skills, from cameras, editing, rigging, lighting, writing, color grading, acting, etc. by being on sets, networking, asking questions with humility, and always pushing. From all the skills I learned, I put it into my own short films doing it all by myself as one man band, doing 4 short films by myself in less than a year to really test my knowledge, increase my versatility, and push myself all around for now until I write and direct my first feature, which I plan to do next year.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience, consistency, and humility. The advice I have for people is to immerse yourself best possible to know how any craft you’re interested in operates and always continue learning and improving. And, never stop and never give up. And, that camera you have, that light you have, shoot the film you’re constantly thinking about. Even if you don’t have a crew for now, still shoot it. You’re gonna learn SO MUCH about yourself, your skills, and your knowledge as you’re going with the flow. Then, when you get a crew, you’re gonna have so much clarity, patience, and understanding because you’ve done other departments before. Watch tutorials, ask your mentors, network and connect on social media, research. Always continue to learn and constantly push yourself.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
That they believed in me and supported me and that’s priceless. My parents always saw me inspired with movies and acting. They knew this was always my dream but they thought it was just like for fun and games. But, when they saw that I still did it even in my adult years, they really knew that I was serious about the craft. They saw me make content, make music videos for artists, do videography, make short films. My parents always saw me as Tyler Perry. When I decided to go to film school and get into Full Sail, I asked them if they can come for a tour, they absolutely knew that I was serious about this and they helped me get into film school. I’ll always be forever thankful for that.
