We were lucky to catch up with Tea Fannie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tea, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I have had multiple miscarriages. Coming to the realization that kids may not be something in my future has been so hard to accept. It affected my mental health for close to a decade, even while I was in an emotionally abusive marriage. One of the things I hated hearing, but will never rebut because I understand where people are coming from is: “You’re lucky you didn’t have kids with him”. I’d chuckle and agree and just shrug it off, but it’s hard to relate a miscarriage to “you’re lucky”. It hurt hearing at the time I was still going through it. Now that I do music, I look around and realize so many women go through what I went through but it’s not talked about. I use music to help me go through things in my life and I couldn’t find a song to help me through at the time, so when I started doing music, I created one. It’s called “Transcendence”. It was originally on my first album back in 2020 and I have re released it just this past summer with a new beat by catfishthewizard under an EP titled “Loosies”. Through music, I’m ok to talk about these things now.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I create music. I love writing for other artists, or teaching the youth. I grew up on a plethora of different music and so now I like to rap on different genres. My main jam is hip hop esque. I’ve been applying to festivals anywhere in the world that will have me, and I love to travel and perform! So far my music has me fortunate enough to perform internationally in Manchester, London, Rotterdam, Tokyo, Prague! And for Turtle Island so far: Yellowknife, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Drumheller, Watrous, Winnipeg, Red Deer, and Fernie.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
10,000 hours. It’s not exactly a thing you keep track of but it just means, work at your craft. I still practice rapping, writing, stage presence. All the things I want to excel in, I practice often.
I also think it’s important to keep learning and stay curious. I was fortunate enough to go to a school that was self-learning so it taught me how to learn. I still use those skills today, best high school.
If you are early in your music journey I would recommend to step into the world with no ego and willing to take criticism. There are people willing to help if you allow it, but sometimes the hip hop world seems to imply you need to come with ego. You can have all the confidence int he world, don’t need too much ego to ruin learning opportunities for you. I learned a lot from my peers.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The most helpful person in my journey has been Highku Productions. From the early days it was her and I wearing any hat we needed to, to get stuff done and her wife played the DJ role and also made beats! We made our own music videos, with her shooting and me editing everything after learning from youtube tutorials lol. She styled me and boosted my confidence which came through on stage and on screen. She is my personal manager now and helps me navigate through this industry. Thank you Highku, breaking the stigma.
