Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jocelyn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jocelyn, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
There’s a beautiful Buddhist teaching that says, “No Mud, No Lotus.” It reminds us that suffering (the mud) is a necessary part of life, allowing happiness and growth (the lotus) to bloom, a concept shared by Thich Nhat Hanh that deeply resonates with me. Though I’m young, I feel I’ve already experienced my fair share of hardships, each one shaping me into the person I am today. My resilience is rooted in the adversity I’ve faced, with every challenge teaching me how to rise stronger, wiser, and more grounded than before. If you told my younger self I’d be where I am today, she’d probably giggle in disbelief. But here I am — living proof that beauty and strength can bloom even from the darkest places. When you think of lotuses, think of resilience. Like the lotus, I’ve submerged in the mud, risen through the murky waters, and bloomed — untouched and unsoiled. I am the lotus.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As the first among a dozen siblings to be born in the United States, while the rest immigrated here, I experienced challenges that shaped my perspective and resilience. I definitely credit my parents and siblings for my strong work ethic and drive. My parents managed the weight of raising all of us, which was no small task but the one who inspires me most is my mom. I would be lying to you if I said I didn’t grow up in a broken home but that is what helps write my story today. My mom was the heart of our family, a provider through and through. Even after her passing, her spirit continues to guide and live within us. I remember watching my sweet lady as she did her makeup, cared for her skin, styled her hair, and ours too — sometimes even coloring it herself. There was nothing she couldn’t do in my eyes. Like many Asian-American families, we were encouraged to pursue careers in the medical field, and I followed that path because I wanted to make my family proud — especially my parents. But over time, I began to ask myself whether that path was really mine, or just the one laid out for me. I realized I was living for them, not for myself. In the summer of 2022, after my mom passed, I took a lash course. I loved it. A part of me wanted to drop everything and dive in, but my heart was still too heavy, still tied to my parents’ dreams. So I went back to school. Then came 2025, the year everything shifted. I made the bold decision to enroll in beauty school. My passion lit up instantly. I felt unstoppable. I loved everything — skin, hair, beauty, lashes, nails. I chose the esthetics program, and everything clicked into place. It felt natural. It felt like home. It felt like me. This is where my story finds clarity and purpose. This is where my creativity meets my calling. This is Lotus Beauty Baar. Providing facials, waxes, peels and many more to come!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience, adaptability, and curiosity have been the driving forces behind my growth. Patience is key. Success doesn’t happen overnight, victories take time to build. Take risks! There’s always more to learn. And learn to adapt! because life has a funny way of throwing the unexpected at you. One of the greatest lessons my brother Say ever taught me was simple but powerful, “don’t be afraid to ask questions”. Be open, be willing, be curious. There’s a saying, “Fear is the mind-killer,” and it couldn’t be more true. Anyone who has reached success will tell you the same thing—ask. Ask again. Stay curious. Questions lead to answers, and answers lead to knowledge. And knowledge? There’s no limit to how much of it you can gather. Growth never ends, and neither should your hunger to learn. A wise man once told me, “try”. So simple yet so effective because if you never try, how will you ever know what you’re capable of?

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I like to step away and just breathe. Slowing down is my reset button. Sometimes that looks like taking a walk, tidying up my space, or putting my phone down so I’m not overstimulated. I remind myself that it’s okay not to have everything figured out. Some things can wait, and that’s perfectly fine. I try to focus on what truly matters and prioritize based on my energy, not pressure. And when I feel like I need grounding, I reach out to people who bring me back to myself. Sometimes that’s my sister Emma. When it feels like my world is falling apart, she and her little babies give me the comfort and push I didn’t even know I needed. Most of all, I remind myself that stress is temporary. I celebrate small wins along the way, because even tiny progress deserves acknowledgment. And I try to be gentle with myself. Growing, healing, and figuring things out takes time. So breathe, it will all be okay. It will all workout. Everything happens for a reason, gods timing.
