We were lucky to catch up with Davina Holguin Ochoa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Davina with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I learned about work ethic from my mom and dad. Growing up my dad had two jobs to support us. My mom was a stay at home mom. But she had told me how she used to work two jobs to support herself before marrying my dad. I would see how hard she worked around the house and volunteering at my school as well as helping with my dance school. I guess it work ethic was just imprinted on me. I was always told if you’re going to do something do it 110% because that’s your name people associate with it. They also told me anything worth doing is worth doing right the first time. So whenever I do something I hear their voices in my head and that guides me. I also do not like to leave people short handed so that leads to me working when I don’t feel well or having jam packed days trying to get it all done which is part of my work ethic too.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner of Shrunk 3D Los Angeles North. I purchased the franchise last year after extensive research. I was looking for a career change and wanted to move away from working for others, but not sure what I wanted to do.
My husband and I loved the concept, particularly because I enjoy taking pictures, and this business allows me to capture more than just a standard photograph. I truly love being part of people’s most cherished moments, capturing images of loved ones that last forever. It has also been a great way to show my daughters that you can start a business at any age, even as a mom.
We are a very active Girl Scout family. Both of my daughters are Scouts, participating in their own troops and a travel troop. I also serve as our area’s Cookie Chair, meaning 100 plus troops report to me during cookie season.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say three qualities that were impactful in my journey are my work ethic. As a business owner in the beginning you wear many hats and put in more than 40 hours a week. If you don’t have that strong work ethic things won’t get done, your business will struggle. Motivation, my girls are my motivation to succeed. Without motivation you will flounder when things get tough. And finally adaptability and flexibility, actually that’s true for life in general. Being able to adapt and bend is how businesses succeed. If you do not adapt or aren’t flexible your business will have a hard time succeeding. Especially as a new business owner I’m still learning what’s working and what’s not. So being flexible helps me pivot to take advantage of what’s working.
You need your squad as my girls like to say. You need those people who you can depend on to tell you the truth, to be there when you need to let off steam, to cheer you on and to make you laugh. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, I would love to partner or collaborate with youth sports teams. I know they’re always looking for fundraising ideas and I would love to have Shrunk 3D Los Angeles North be part of that. What child doesn’t want their own action figure. I would also like to work with event planners. They help create and execute peoples cherished moments that I want to capture.
