Meet Joe Astle

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joe Astle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Joe with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I have a terrible work ethic. If I’m not barely working at some crappy job I’m usually playing Fortnite or cooking pork ribs for 4 hours.

When I look at a guitar I feel kind of sick, it’s a reminder of my failures.

I work really hard on Fortnite now.

My work ethic comes from panic and fear that cool famous people won’t know who I am.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I used to make music in my teens and twenties and now I am fat and play videogames.

I’ll probably make music again when I’m bored of YouTube and videogames.

I wanna make an album about being in your thirties.

Mostly I’m thinking about these pork ribs I have in the oven right now.

I’m just another idiot who makes music I guess. I try not to get to down on my productivity because I’ve made more crap than Kurt cobain did. Bless his soul of course.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

You must learn that the best music is made when you make it for love.

Also learn how to perfectly cook pork ribs.

And don’t even bother recording anything properly because who cares. Just make it sound like crap.

As long as the song or the ribs are delicious it doesn’t matter how you cooked the song.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

I barely read. I like to buy books and then I put them on a shelf and then I sell them on eBay and buy cooler stuff.

I did read Mike Love’s book like a year ago and it was awesome.

I read half of Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. I stopped reading it because I already knew everything it was saying. Everyone is insane and best to keep quiet usually.

Books are for losers.
