G. A. Hauser of New Haven on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with G. A. Hauser and have shared our conversation below.

G. A., so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
To those who have never read my work or another author of gay romance, I think they assume it’s pure pornography. Yes, there are sexy scenes in my novels, but to me, the story is the real star. The sexual relationships are there to stimulate, yes, and also to show us the deep love between characters. But my work now, especially within the last five years, are more story-driven, not sex-driven.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Jersey-girl through and through. Although I have lived many places, including England, I still am that kid from Fair Lawn. I graduated college with a Bachelor of Art degree and commuted to the Fashion Institute of Technology for my AA degree. I am also a graduate gemologist with certificates from the Gemological Institute of America. I’ve been many things in my life, working in health spas, retail, dog kennels, libraries, as well as a post office in Bishops Stortford England. While living in Seattle, I worked with the Seattle Police Department in patrol. My background and traveling experience has helped me write about a variety of places and careers.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Trust. Sadly, too many people simply don’t say what they mean, nor do as they say. Maybe after being a cop for so long, I have learned how to read people. As I grow older, I share less and less with people. Perhaps that’s just me.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of ridicule. Fear of simply never being good enough. I used to put pressure on myself to make a name for myself. I had a five-year plan that never came to be. Now I learned success isn’t earned by the money you make. It’s a sense of doing the right thing. Of being kind. Of giving back. The fear is now gone.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Writing about gay relationships, I guess my life project has always been, live and let live. Even as a kid, I never understood why people hate. Hate an entire group of people, when they don’t even know them. No matter how long I live, I will always write about love.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
We all have a personal journey. I believe we don’t vanish upon death. I feel as if we are all small flames carrying love and knowledge to the next place. I suppose it’s normal to ask what happens when we die. Maybe that’s fueling my interest in the paranormal. Do many people understand deeply that we are all one soul? That we are all connected and what we do has consequences for all.
