Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with William Trostel of Center City

We’re looking forward to introducing you to William Trostel. Check out our conversation below.

William , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
The winter is the “off season” for my photography and videography business. Right now I am doing a bunch of admin work, booking for the next year, working on my website portfolio, social media feeds, and seo work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a freelance photographer and videographer from Central Pennsylvania. I have been holding a camera for a little over ten years now. I like my work to have a cinematic feel with heavy color grades and an often melancholy and eerie look to it. Lately I have been capturing a lot of landscapes with my camera and drone as well as creating Youtube videos of my travels. I also work in weddings and the commercial advertising industry as well with my content.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Not who, but what. Youtube taught me more about my field of art than any other single person, place, or thing. The countless hours watching tutorials, how to videos, and lessons. Even watching videos to get my drone pilots license.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of my art not being liked has held my back since I picked up a camera. But as the time goes on, I care less and less, and do more of what I like.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That art needs to have some deep meaning behind it. It doesnt. Sometimes it is powerful enough to have something that simply looks cool. People try and make art deeper than what it needs to be.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My legacy is the images I have captured that are peoples profile photos, wall art, t shirts, and anything else that my art is on that will exist after I am gone.
