We’re looking forward to introducing you to Adrienne Maye. Check out our conversation below.
Adrienne, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
If I had to choose between intelligence, energy or integrity. I would choose every single time, integrity. Integrity is something that I feel shows your true character. It’s doing the right thing when no one is watching or would ever know that you did the right thing. Each day, I ask myself is this the right thing to do whether it is a personal, business, family or friend decision. I want to always take the right route and decisions when making choices that affect me and anyone else.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Adrienne Maye, Registered Nurse (RN) and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). I am the owner of Moving Forward with Diabetes Management, LLC where we specialize in education and resources for people living with diabetes, with a specialization in prediabetes. We provide organizational trainings on diabetes and chronic disease management and also speaking engagements on a variety of topics that are engaging and applicable to the targeted audience. I have been a RN for over 20 years and during my years of caring for patients in the hospitals, physician offices and other settings, one thing that I noticed is that a lot of my patients and clients had a difficult time understanding their medical diagnosis, specifically diabetes and other chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol. The medical jargon that was associated with their diagnosis and how to manage it made it difficult if not impossible for them to take the steps to manage their health. I really wanted to provide a resource so that people could understand their medical diagnosis and be able to manage it from day to day. I wrote the book, Beating the Sugar B.E.A.S.T.™ Lifestyle Management for People of Color Living with Diabetes with the intention of breaking the information down in a way that people could understand it and apply it to their daily lives. The book has become a valuable resource in providing a tool that most people living with diabetes can effectively incorporate into their way of living with discipline and dedication. We also have a Self-Paced Online Educational Course, Take Charge and Balance that focuses on Prediabetes and Lifestyle Changes and provides bonuses such as blood pressure logs, weight trackers and meal planning tools that can be used for day-to-day accountability, and we also offer VIP 1:1 Coaching Sessions on Chronic Disease Management and Diabetes Management.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that most shaped how I see myself is my relationship with my mom. My mom was a single mother who defied all of the odds of what most people would say a single mother could achieve raising a child on her own. My mom was quiet, private and very independent. She would see an obstacle and jump right through it, climb over it, pace herself until she made it through. My mom was raised in the church and provided a solid foundation for me and my faith. My mom always believed in me and I felt with her trust I could do anything. Even when I failed at something she was right there to cheer me on to the next thing I set my mind too. My mom provided qualities in me such as integrity, discipline and compassion and had she not been in my life, my road and drive to success would have had a totally different trajectory.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
The time that I almost gave up was during my sophomore year of high school. I had come to a point where I was disengaged, not attending classes and was to the brink of failing out of school. During this time, I realized that it was important for me to get it together and complete my sophomore year and complete my upcoming years and graduate with my diploma which I did. It took the help of my family and continued dedication to realizing that there was more for me upon completion of my diploma and goals that I wanted to accomplish.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say my family and my spiritual foundation is what really matters to me. My immediate family tells me the real, honest, raw truth with no sugar coating. It is important for me to stay grounded, and they really keep me honest in everything that I do.
My spiritual foundation is also what keeps me grounded. My faith and prayer life are vitally important in everything that I do, personally, with my family and definitely with my business.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I continue to live a life of integrity which will always bring me peace. Also, continuing to follow what my mom always taught me and that is to treat people the way I would want to be treated and even if they don’t treat me right, still to do the right thing.
