We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kash Hovey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kash below.
Kash, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My life has been a pretty interesting and unpredictable journey. I feel with every obstacle that has come up, it’s been an opportunity to test a part of myself and work through something I didn’t originally know how to do. With every job or experience I’ve had, I’ve been able to learn more about myself as well as how to connect with and understand people and what we are all going through during different chapters of our lives. When I began hosting “On Air with Ka$h,” it allowed me to open up and share life experiences with colleagues, friends and other artists whose work I admire. I enjoy connecting with people and when someone reaches out and says how a specific conversation on the show clicked with them and helped them through something, it gives purpose to my work and inspires me to work harder.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I grew up in the entertainment industry. I was always creating as a kid, whether it was drawing, building or performing. I studied theater and film in school as well as worked professionally as an actor, promoter and videographer. In college I continued to study cinema as well as law, business and computers. When I graduated from CSUN, I began working at WME and to really started to grasp the business side of the industry. My position in the VO department at WME allowed me some creative growth as an artist also. I got involved in some feature films and TV productions. I shifted gears and began focusing more on producing and acting. When things closed due to the pandemic, I launched my talk show “On Air with Ka$h.” When studios opened back up again, my work on my show provided me with new and exciting opportunities to pursue in the industry as well as hosting at film festivals and guest hosting on other talks shows like “Good Day Live.” I worked on a pilot and a new feature film prior to the current SAG strike. I look forward to creating and promoting new content once the union has reached a resolution.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My parents encouraged education and a strong work ethic which is something I’m so grateful to them both for. I’ve had numerous mentors that taught me important skills during different periods of my life. Something that sticks out for me is when I was studying martial arts as a kid. My sensei told the class that if we weren’t making 25 mistakes a day, we weren’t trying hard enough. I remember being 10 and for a minute I thought my sensei was saying it’s Ok to do something wrong. I quickly snapped out of that thought and understood what he was actually telling us. He was telling us that we can’t go through life too afraid to fail that we never try. Get out there, you will make mistakes but that is how you grow.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I’ve had some unexpected losses this past year. Loss was always something that I struggled with growing up. People with agendas would come in and out of my life. Right when I got to know somebody and felt like we connected, I’d learn there was a manipulation and I had to walk away. My childhood best friend who I had a shared passion for cinema and made films with was dealing with some personal things when we were 15. Unfortunately he chose a path in life that ended with his passing 5 years later. 15 was also a time when I began living in and dealing with an adult environment that I really wasn’t ready for. There was a lot of grooming and manipulative behavior that I had to face as a teen and didn’t have the proper tools for yet. Two people from this group who I had been close with in the past had tragically passed away right after my childhood best friend died. When I was 22, I was carrying a lot of baggage emotionally and suffered a lethal arrhythmia while working out at the gym. Fortunately, I was revived and I was so thankful to have a second chance at life. There were still obstacles I had to go through and new experiences and people came into my life. I feel like each year has gotten progressively better for me. The first loss I experienced this year, was unexpected and brought on so many emotions and past memories. There was a great deal of support which allowed me to have closure while dealing with this tragedy. I feel like this happened at a point in my life when I was reevaluating again and making some new choices with where the next chapter of my life would go. I feel like getting over the past, moving on, and living up to my potential has been my focus this year.
