We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Violet Helm. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Violet below.
Violet, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose through the long journey of realizing that I myself, as an artist, am simply a vessel for my art. I’m just lucky enough to be the one who gets to create it. The art itself is what carries the value and is what affects others. I give myself meaning through the way that I live my life, so if we’re talking about fulfillment, which more of an acute focus, then yes, creating art is what fulfills me. Purpose is what I’m offering others and my art is what does that.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi! I’m Violet Helm. Music is the language that I speak and it’s the one that I use to translate the inner workings of my version of the human experience. I like to say that I’m more of a translator than a musician, but if we’re being practical, I’m a recording artist, music producer and vocalist.
A lot of what you’ll hear if you look me up on the web is moody piano ballads and layered harmonies. I was experimenting for a time with pop and hip-hop and maybe I’ll bring that back, but for now, I’m focusing on a concept album that’s full of booming string quartets, heavy bass and piano runs. You won’t find typical song structures there, instead you’ll hear nine minute tracks made up of baroque prog and a few Euro instrumentals mixed in. I have no idea what the hell I’m doing, I’m just making the music that I want to hear. I recently released an EP called ‘Body’, and a couple of alternative covers of two classics that I love, ‘ Mad World’ and ‘Wicked Game’.
I also sing in a band called Crewless. It’s indie and delicious and you should listen to it. We just released our sophomore album titled ‘Lighthouse’ and a single with a handful of tracks we’re really proud of called ‘Deepest Blue’. I’m currently based out of Salt Lake City and am hoping to learn to produce bass EDM music this year, so catch me on the other side of the deck at the underground bass scene here soon.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Learn from others. Truly. That’s all I can say. Get yourself in rooms where you are the least talented there and get comfortable scaring the hell out of yourself. Hang out with those who you want to impress and ask questions. Don’t be afraid to look dumb.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
If you’re an electronic bass artist and/or producer and you want a female artist on your track, reach out. I’m a songwriter, I’ll give you more layers/harmonies than you will know what to do with and I am a professional vocal engineer, so the stems I send you will be ready to throw into the mix. Email [email protected] or dm @violethelm on Instagram. Pop, any EDM, hip-hop hooks, rock ballads, folk and country are also on my bread and butter list, so if you’re not a bass artist, don’t hesitate to reach out, I’d love to work with you.
