Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mara Kore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mara, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only one in a room that looks the way I do can be so stressful at times. Often, I get dirty or disgusted looks from people, but there are some people that are too curious to just stay quiet even if they disapprove of my aesthetic. Those people are the ones that change everything. All it takes is one conversation where they’re blown away by kindness and intelligence, and their entire perception of a person can change. Once one person steps up, there will always be another, often with the same result.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
By technicality, I’m a body piercer. But I personally have come to dislike that term. I prefer body modification artist. Anyone can poke a hole in skin and put something sparkly in it, but not everyone takes great pride in their work and does it properly with the safety and comfort of their clients in mind. I feel like that’s some of what sets me aside from all of piercers in a 30-50 mile radius of me. To be able to look at the anatomy of an ear, for example, and be able to come up with a piercing and jewelry that will both be successful and give that person something fantastic that they’ll cherish, that’s what’s special to me, and that’s what keeps me going.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Knowledge of anatomy is incredibly impactful. Knowing what is where, what areas you can safely pierce and which ones to avoid opens up so many opportunities because the probability of error is so minimal at that point. Honestly, as much as none of us like to admit it, math plays a role in success as well. In my case, knowing proper angles can make all the difference between success and failure. There’s truthfully so many things I could touch on, that I could go on for hours, so I’ll leave it at those two. If you’re early in your journey, with anything, LEARN. Take the time to sit down and read that informational book written by someone you highly respect. Reach out to someone in your desired industry and ask questions.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to find some people to collaborate with on piercing or modification projects. My only true requirements are a solid understanding of the healing process, an open mind, and steady communication. If something seems strange, I want to know about it immediately so that we can adjust our approach accordingly. Anyone that’s interested can absolutely reach out to me either on Instagram or through email with their ideas and we can go from there.
