Meet Sam McSwain

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sam McSwain. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sam below.

Sam, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from my family; from seeing both of my parents become first generation entrepreneurs out of a family of nine children on both sides, I’ve always felt as though it’s my duty to continue their legacy. When you see the sacrifices that those before you have made, it’s much easier to not quit during the triumph of life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

As the second generation entrepreneur, I am from Fort Worth, Texas, and got my degree in marketing from Mayze business school of Texas A&M while competing as a student athlete on the track field team as a high jumper. I have always had a passion for sales and marketing and it was through real life experiences that showed me the correlation between the two. I after getting my degree in marketing and 2016 I realize that everyone with the social media account consider themselves a marketing guru however I had just paid A&M $60,000 for my certificate in Marketing; I had to figure out a way to distinguish myself. So I went down to three major roads and Brian College Station, which Are University Dr., Texas Avenue and Welborn Road; I’ll walk into each business and offer my services as a marketing professional. Through these relationships, I started social media marketing before it was a huge trend or business. At the end of each relationship results were the same which were business owners saying that they appreciate social media marketing however they would really appreciate my services as a sales person for their company. I was young at the time and still green behind the ears so I did not realize the whole point of Marketing; to make sales. I then got an opportunity to work at OutboundEngine, which was a startup company and the top fifth best marketing company in the nation at the time of me taking the job in 2018 for the first few months of the job. I slept in my car until I was able to get approved for an apartment within the city of Austin and I accepted a position with a $$2000 relocation package that I was obligated to fulfill by staying there for six months or otherwise having to pay back; I stayed there for 10 months. My point of being there was to gain the sales experience that most of my peers as millennials do not have after getting a degree. I worked diligently and took advantage of early morning, sales meetings, lunch sales meetings and after work sales meetings and even called into Pacific times after hours to get an extra opportunity for sale the great thing about working for OutboundEngine was that we were a marketing company that sold sass software as a system and we sold social media marketing, email marketing and social advertisement to realtors insurance agents and mortgage loan officers all of what you need to buy a home and all of which who sells people, so they did not like receiving calls. I made it a point to reach out to 250 to 300 people each day after I put my two weeks in shortly after the pandemic arose however, I moved back to college Station where I became a sales marketing director for FIT BODY BOOT CAMP CEO & Lose to gain CEO business-2-Marketing. The first client that I received with my marketing company was an appliance company who allowed me to create their SCO and build out their Google business along with providing social advertisement through Facebook and Instagram. Through this relationship, I realized, although I was great at selling, and although I could also bear the weight of one, client, I would need some help. I continue to work for FIT BODY BOOT CAMP CEO & Lose to gain CEO a year and a half as I built out their sales system there sell spreadsheets their email marketing text message, marketing and social advertisement. It was at FIT BODY BOOT CAMP CEO & Lose to gain CEO also connected with my passion of guiding others to a healthier lifestyle and better habits when I got to FIT BODY BOOT CAMP CEO & Lose to gain CEO; each member paid $35-$50 per week to receive our services and no one could become a member before speaking to me. I was able to merge my love of helping people and my love of sales and this was the first best job that I ever had; once my job was complete I then went to Frisco and consulted for a comp compliance company ObviumQ, where I led the creation of marketing for a new product; I was taxed with packaging, graphic design in overall what the consumer would see on the shelf. Fortunately, for that company, they were bought out shortly after working with him, which led to me moving back to college Station-a place that I love. Then went on to do more sales for a company called trade wing, which sold association management systems and confidential online communities to associations around the globe. I did this while also still working in my marketing company however realize that I didn’t wanna do high-pressure sales, and I also did not care to market for small business owners; I wanted to buy and sell real assets. I then set my mind and focus on luxury assets, which led me to studying for real estate. During my time studying for real estate, I was then approached by a part 135 aviation company, which is a fancy way for saying we sell charter flights and we only sell by the plane, not by the seat. Most people are surprised to hear the quotes have such high price points, however, I continuously reiterate that the corporate Jet industry is based around corporate convenience and not luxury. The flight from Dallas Fort Worth to Houston could cost you a one-way 5000 or two way $10,000 ticket. and that just depends on the conditions. Just like a regular flight, every variable matters; luggage fuel mileage, even landing the plane, and considering the cost of each tire plays a role, not to mention Wi-Fi. Upon partnering with QR Jess, I was tasked with helping the company procure elite athletes we’ve it’s mainly flown athletes for the last 16 years. We currently have flown many teams within the national women’s soccer league and we are a constant assistance anytime that any team needs help. Give him my background as a student athlete at A&M and also give him my background as the CEO of a mobile food delivery service app that was created in 2014, I saw myself as a athlete that has never put entrepreneurship to the side and has never put athletics to the side; There are so many more athletes that are just like I was and they deserve the proper guidance. Guidance is not just telling an athlete how much money they can make, but rather showing the athlete the most creative ways they can make the most money with their name. After a year I was able to help for athletes sign with QR jets; three soccer athletes and one suck one golf athlete, all of which A&M Aggies, and all of which are strong, intelligent young ladies. At this point in my career, it is my goal to continue to help athletes procure business deals that allow them to leverage their name Imogen likeliness and most importantly teach them the importance of leveraging their NIL. Along with this I like to help guide athletes in a way that shows them how to invest and wise investments versus depreciating assets, although the Jets look nice and fancy, I find it much more important to educate student athletes on real estate and ways that they can be creative while investing in their future.. My goal has always been to inspire others and motivate them to continue to work on themselves and I figure what better way to do that then to help the young student athlete that just like me simply needed some guidance.
That being said, my marking agency is launching a new app which allows athletes and business owners to connect with brands and sports that fit each other. The name of our app is called NIL Cowboys, and can be found on our website, NILcowboys.com or https://www.business2marketing.com/nilcowboys.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Willingness, Integrity and Grit. I believe these three qualities are imperative to fulfilling entrepreneurship the right way.

Willingness allows us to to stay consistent. When you lack motivation, at least stay consistent.

Integrity allows us to stay aligned with our values, while evolving and not destroying the things that make us feel whole.

Grit gives us the ability to meet trials and triumph with progressive perspective. Leading with a solution first mindset, giving us power to make it over the emotional bumps that come with trying to accomplish.goals.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My mother has been the most helpful in regards to helping me overcome challenges and nurturing the fire that burns within me. By putting me within her beauty school that she ran for 20 years with my father, this gave me an environment that showed me many essential skills; hospitality, public manners, cleanliness, sanitation, how to work with different mindset and behaviors. Growing up in the beauty school and being under my mother‘s wing was the most impactful in regards to the qualities of being strong yet approachable, precise and also fluid. These are qualities that one must have to lead an entire beauty school of multiple culture and diversity. I grew up learning around a majority Vietnamese culture in the late 90s and early 2000s of my parents beauty school.. From the early 2000s until late 2010 I saw a majority black and African-American culture. From the 2010 until the 2020s I saw an increase in majority Hispanic culture grow within my parents beauty college. Seeing my mother and father lead many different cultures over three decades gave me much insight on important qualities that I believe it takes for someone to be a leader and for someone to help successfully create other leaders.
