An Inspired Chat with Yu Wei Chu of Taiwan

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Yu Wei Chu. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Yu Wei, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I am a Ph.D student at National Taiwan Normal University. I check the news in the morning, and go to the research room writing my paper. After that, I will discuss with my professor in the afternoon.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, my name is Yu-Wei Chu, and I am a fashion designer specializing in custom-made and haute couture gowns.
I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with an MFA in Fashion Design. My professional journey began as an Alterations Specialist at David’s Bridal in Savannah, GA, where I honed my skills in customizing gowns by altering the size and design.
I later joined a designer brand, “Ming Wang,” under Meison, as a Product & Design Assistant in their New York office, gaining valuable experience in product development and design processes. I also worked as a Technical Design Assistant at Great Giant Fibre Garment Co.
Currently, I am pursuing my Ph.D. in Design at National Taiwan Normal University. My research focuses on fashion marketing, consumer psychology, and apparel economics, with particular emphasis on wedding dresses and gowns. In June 2025, I presented a conference paper titled “Prioritizing techniques for better making wedding dresses using QFD” at the ISMS Marketing Science Conference.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I was pursuing my MFA in Fashion Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design, I developed my fashion philosophy of timeless fashion. My goal is to create high-fashion, couture gowns that transcend trends, providing the wearer with a truly unique and eternal garment. During my time working at David’s Bridal in New York, I honed my skills in client communication, learning to understand my customers’ true needs and integrating their desires into both my designs and services. My life’s philosophy is rooted in a passion for fashion and a commitment to lifelong learning. I am currently focused on inventing new clothing structures and ways of wearing them, with the hope of creating an invention.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
My journey toward a Ph.D. in design was deeply influenced by my work experience, which helped me grow significantly. However, I felt a stronger desire to contribute more meaningfully. This led me to pursue a doctorate, with the goal of publishing papers and contributing to the field of design academia. At the same time, I want to continue my creative work and inventions, developing new fashion products and features. My ultimate hope is to bring progress and make a positive impact on society.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I believe the art of fashion and craftsmanship will not only endure but also become more valuable. As AI becomes more prevalent, human creativity will be more essential, and people will seek out unique, customized clothes. Our lives will increasingly need the enrichment of art, and I believe that fashion and art have the power to create a more beautiful and abundant life.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I want to establish a fashion apparel and costume museum to preserve and exhibit iconic garments from various eras, including pieces of significant historical or cultural importance and those made from innovative materials. The museum will also feature dedicated gallery spaces for artists and designers to showcase their work. In addition, the museum can also host fashion-related cultural events, brand presentations, and concerts.
