Dr. Héctor L. E. Olivencia shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Héctor L. E., really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: When have you felt most loved—and did you believe you deserved it?
All my life I know I was loved. But wasn’t until 2022 that I realized and was mindful about feeling loved. In my first time as a counselor for a camp; one that no one would speak my language and I didn’t even know anyone there. After the week went by at the end the words of all the people there to me; the hugs and the tears.. the words saying I love you! That moment when the words match the actions and there’s no words that can describe that… the power of transforming lives by actions and receiving in return what you genuinely did by love. Did i felt like deserving it? Yes! I deserve to receive what I give!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Clinical Psychologist Doctor based in Puerto Rico that focuses his work in grieving children. Also I’ve been working with adults. Right now I’m focused on Psichoeducation. Educating and orientating people helps immensely the community of grieving families. The latino community has no many words that describe the grief like in English. I learned this as a counselor in Experience Camps in 2022 while being there I discovered my purpose of studying Clinical Psychology. My focus now is to provide a new space for Spanish speakers and be that person that gives hope in their grieving journey.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
That moment was when I attended a grief camp in Pennsylvania… it opened my eyes to see life differently.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
What to do and what not to do. Suffering changes perspectives if you are willing to.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Totally yes! I’m very extrovert, easy going and friendly. Even though I’m really serious with the things I work with in Mental Health.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
The journey I took to be where I’m at. I started studying with the goal of becoming a Doctor … in Medicine or field related a d studied a Bachelor’s in Medical Microbiology but interest changed and passion for mental health was unleashed.
