Jenny Carey of UK on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Jenny Carey shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Jenny, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I have been retired now since 2021, but I keep myself busy with making resin crafts and artwork, as we have a market stall, once a week on Saturdays. It gives us something to look forward to, and we meet lovely people there.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jenny Carey and I have written two books called, Fun Poems For Your Child and The Travels of Mr Cat. I also have a coloring book called, A Coloring Book For Children, which is the illustrations from my other two books. I have won several awards for my books, which I am very proud of. I am thinking of writing another book, also for children. I’m hoping to publish it very soon. I hope that children continue to enjoy reading my books, as much as I did writing them.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mother always believed in me. She was amazing in many ways. She told me that I could achieve anything, if I work hard and believed in myself. I spent many years working within the hosiery industry, and worked in engineering for several years. I then decided I wanted to follow my dream to work within health care. I started as a health assistant, then gained qualifications to enter university. I graduated with a diploma for Higher education. I was a staff nurse for several years, and decided to gain a degree. I graduated in 2012 with a BSC degree. I left school without qualifications, so I felt proud of this achievement, as I was a mature student, and continued to work full time, whilst studying for my qualifications. Unfortunately, my mother passed away in 2012, before I graduated. I’m sure though, she would be proud of me.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You can achieve anything you want. Don’t give up, and believe in yourself.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I believe that it is. I would like to think that any people that I meet, see me for what I am, and not make any pre conceived ideas about me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
In life I have always given 100% of myself. I treated patients that I nursed all the same. I treated them as I would have liked to be treated myself. I have been an advocate for them and fought their cause if needed. I never expected any thanks back, or praise from the management. Nursing is a vocation, and always felt that I wanted to go the extra mile in that vocation.
