An Inspired Chat with Temitayo Oluyege of Ibadan, Nigeria

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Temitayo Oluyege. Check out our conversation below.

Temitayo, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I would hire me; and here’s why:

I am dedicated, consistent, and always willing to learn. I don’t just work to finish tasks; I work to add value. I put in excellence, give quality time and effort, and make sure anything I meet is better than I found it. I solve problems, think ahead, and handle my responsibilities with maturity.

My work at May Coutures has sharpened my skills in leadership, creativity, customer relations, time management, team coordination, and delivering top-quality fashion pieces. I know how to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and still maintain high standards.

I am reliable, trustworthy, and committed to growth; both personally and for the organisation I’m part of.

And most importantly, I love what I do.

That’s why I would hire me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Temitayo Oluyege, and I am the founder of May Coutures; a fashion brand that blends African culture, modern style, and excellent craftsmanship. We specialize in men’s wear and accessories. Our pieces are designed to make people feel confident, stylish, and connected to their roots, no matter where they are in the world.

What truly sets my brand apart is our creative use of African prints, our attention to detail, and our commitment to quality. Each outfit is carefully crafted to tell a story; a story of culture, identity, and pride. We also believe strongly in sustainability. Through the May Coutures Recycling Club, we transform waste fabrics into unique accessories and wearable art, reducing fashion waste and promoting eco-friendly practices.

Beyond creating fashion, I am passionate about empowerment. I train young people and university students in fashion and entrepreneurship, helping them gain skills that can support them financially and create better opportunities for their future. Over the years, this has grown into a community of young creatives who are building confidence and independence.

Today, May Coutures serves customers across Nigeria, Africa, and different parts of the world. I am focused on scaling the brand, improving production, and taking African-inspired fashion to a larger global audience.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a young girl, I was often taught, quietly and subtly, that there were limits to what women and girls could achieve. We were told not to dream too big, not to aim too high, and to always be careful with our ambitions. For a long time, I believed that my potential had boundaries, that some dreams were simply not meant for girls like me.

Over time, I realized that this belief was not true. I learned that limits are often placed by society, not by our abilities. Today, I know that my gender does not define what I can accomplish. I can dream boldly, lead confidently, create, and build impact. I no longer see boundaries; only opportunities to grow, inspire, and make a difference.

This belief fuels everything I do, from building May Coutures to empowering young people, showing them that they too can break limits and achieve greatness.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Believe in your dreams, even if others don’t. Take your time, trust yourself, and remember; you are enough. You are stronger, braver, and capable of amazing things.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to mentoring and guiding women step by step to turn their ideas into real, thriving businesses. This means helping them learn the skills they need to succeed, showing them how to access resources and opportunities, supporting them in making smart business decisions, and building their confidence to lead with purpose. I’m here to raise a generation of women entrepreneurs; real women creating real impact; and I won’t stop until they achieve their goals, grow sustainable businesses, and become leaders who inspire others.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes. I can give everything my best, even if no one praises me. I do it because it reflects who I am, it makes me better, and it keeps me growing; whether anyone is watching or not.
