Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Justin Horn of Los Angeles, CA

Justin Horn shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Justin, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: When was the last time you felt true joy?
Well, long ago… nah, just kidding. But seriously, it was really when the animation industry was actually hiring, but due to the mergers, the rise of AI, and corporate greed, it’s been hard to stay positive. Almost everyone I know who worked in the industry had to result in working outside their field just to stay afloat and it just isn’t right. I would say if there is some joy that keeps me going, it’s the people around me, whether it’s family and other creative friends. At least those two things keep me a bit sane.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a storyboard artist working in the animation industry and I create comics on the side. I like to tell funny, crazy and relatable stories. I’m highly inspired by TV, film, and video games. I’m currently storyboarding on a preschool show in Taiwan and creating my new comic series, New Angeles.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Many things, but not in a good way at first. Different types of people, life experiences. I didn’t have any friends growing up and was pretty much an outcast. As time went on, it made me a little bitter and hopeless of the world. Thankfully, many years later, I found there were people like me that loved art and movies. I studied animation at SCAD, which is where I finally found my place.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I started making this comic. The story at its core talks about overcoming anxiety, depression and battling your demons and writing it and coming up with ideas has been like therapy to me. For once, I fell like I have something to say.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I guess so. I try to dress very emo and grunge-like.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
Leaving Alabama to move to LA. No ifs, ands or buts about it. If hell actually is on Earth, I’m convinced it’s Alabama.
