Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Harry Saffold, Jr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Harry, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Life has taught me that there won’t always be an enabler to be my crutch, if any at all, and that fact that I wasn’t born into wealth, so I’ve had to deal with life on its terms, and not on my own terms.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a visual artist, but one of the least embraced artists since much of my art confronts the dogma, excuses for failure and fears that have taken residence within the minds of many people for decades. After accumulating a body of art that speaks to the affairs of humanity; the good, the bad and the ugly, I have begun a series of documentary films that involve my individual trials and triumphs compiled with my body of work. At the moment, I have launched my YouTube channel titled, (Wipe That Smile Off Your Faces), which is a continuation of my work in provocative art through film.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Not that it always matters, but in order to convey the truth that resonates or convicts humanity, the artist, the writer, the filmmaker, the teacher must see humanity at both our highest and lowest in characters. I have learned to see people of the world for who and what they are. Oftentimes, we sympathize for those who don’t deserve it, we love and admire those who are worthy of sanctions and we enable those who should walk in their own shoes. It’s difficult for many to do so, but for me, it has been my conviction to see people for who and what they are, and to do so contributes to human history.
In terms of advice for others, I never plan to advise anyone on their next steps. My classroom has often taken place along unforseen journeys between myself and strangers. They are the individuals who seem most impacted.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
It would be my immediate family. They have loved me at my worst, and because of that, I developed the will to live and to reciprocate that to them. A person’s first relationships start with their immediate families, and although no family is perfect, character and relationship building starts at home, and it’s a part of life’s lessons. I value those lessons.
