We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charlotte Mazey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charlotte below.
Charlotte, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I think I inherited it from my mom and my grandpa mostly. They both were/are entrepreneurs. My grandfather worked his butt off and started from nothing to create his own little empire. My mom other than seeing her create her own endeavors really did a good job instilling the “can do” attitude in me. She also instilled the concept of pivoting, when something isnt quite working you change it up and always flow with whats working and not get hung up on whats not. Creativity really runs in the family. Also, my stubbornness and determination, not to toot my own horn as I do so lol but I have always had the audacity to just figure it out. What is there really to loose.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hi, my name is Charlotte LaRue Mazey and I am the Owner of LaRue & Co. New York; Fine Jewelry for Humans. LaRue & Co. is a handmade fine jewelry company specializing in eco-conscious practices, size and gender inclusivity. I make it my mission to spread knowledge and awareness of where your things come from and how they are made. I also try to provide a safe space for my customers by taking away the stuffy stigma of fine jewelry stores. At LaRue & Co. we don’t judge you never know what is in someones pocket or what they do or don’t know about the jewelry industry. At the end of the day jewelry is a thing, sometimes an investment and sometimes an heirloom. That doesn’t mean you cant have fun while shopping with us.
Right now honestly, I am focusing on expansion. LaRue & Co. is now 6 years young, we just opened our first brick and mortar a year ago and it has been a lot of fun just seeing my little business I started in my San Fransisco studio apartment many moons ago.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hmmm…
1.The Art of Experimentation
2.Research
3.Don’t Quit
I feel a lot of humans don’t allow themselves to experiment. A lot of new business owners in any industry get into the stigma of what the customers want or oh I have to be like this brand blah blah. but most industries are over saturated and a good idea is a good idea. People either don’t know what they want or know they want something new. I think the first thing humans have to realize that being an entrepreneur is all about navigating through constant contradictions. Allow yourself to experiment and play and see what works but don’t get attached to one idea or concept. Allow yourself to flow and see where it takes you.
Do your research. Research doesn’t mean studying day and night. Yes, it can mean that but it can also be scrolling through instagram and seeing what other companies are doing. See what works and doesn’t work for other brands or companies. Sometimes it can even mean just seeing what inspires you. Never stop learning and evolving.
Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart lol. You have to have thick thick skin and be able to put your head down and just keep going. There will be many times where you rethink your whole life lol. Persevere, stay strong. You gotta keep going. The more you challenge yourself the more you grow and evolve and thats where the magic happens. Just remember to breathe and trust yourself and hang in there.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Burnout is inevitable in any venture. Prepare yourself lol. Honestly I take a fuckit day. A day where I just throw all of my responsibilities to the side and just say fuckit. I go explore, go to lunch, do all of the little things that bring me joy. Mental health is something that isnt talked about in entrepreneurship which honestly is a shame. It is very important! There are some days where you will question everything, be at your breaking point and that is when you need to look within, take a beat. On days I truly cant take a fuck it day I take a very hot bath with a glass of wine and write in my gratitude journal to remind myself of all the beautiful blessings I have.
