We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Morgan Easley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
A work in progress.
Finding purpose is a hot topic for so many people. Purpose is defined as “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.” There is no doubt in my mind that we each were placed on this earth to serve a divine purpose, I am learning that purpose evolves! The way we view purpose, how we discover purpose and how we live our purpose evolves as we go through the lifespan.
We have a lifetime to discover and do what makes us come alive, and that may look different throughout the lifespan. So, what I’m doing to live my purpose is leaning into the people, the places, the things, the experiences that bring me joy, that bring me fulfillment, in whatever way that may be. When my purpose is not always clear, that is the personal work for me to do.
I look for areas to serve, I look for ways that I can help and I see it through. From doing this, I’ve been introduced to people and experiences that have helped to launch me to my business and my current self to present-day success.
“My mission in life is not to merely survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” – Maya Angelou
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Here is a snapshot of where I am with True To You…
We’ve already talked about living out our purpose. Personally, I believe we were placed on this earth for others – not simply for our own benefit. Everyone has something to give – whether it be advice, a listening ear, money, or moral support. We GET to GIVE. Others have given to me and my business – their giving has truly been a blessing, resulting in True To You being able to be a blessing to so many others. I look forward to giving more in the days, weeks, months, years to come…
True To You Consulting, LLC. is projected to host signature events this year to benefit a greater cause – a party with a purpose, if you will. We look forward to sharing the official details soon!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Develop your decision-making skills and take calculated risks.
Prayer. Experience. Mentorship.
Decision making is a muscle. It’s a muscle that has to be exercised, especially if you want to become stronger in that area. Being what most call a go-getter is a great way to develop experience and in turn, developing decision-making skills. Growing up, my mom might offer me something different than what I’d eaten and naturally, I’d probably turn up my nose and say “No, thank you, mommy”. In response, she would say “Don’t knock it, until you try it.” How can we know we are good at something/enjoy it/reap great benefits, if we don’t try? I try to make a concerted effort now, to get outside of my comfort zone to try something new, push myself to use different skills, develop another network and foster new relationships.
Prayer, too, is a muscle. True To You Consulting, LLC. is a direct byproduct of my faith walk and I commit to treating it as such. In everything I do, I consult my heavenly Father for guidance and instruction. To some, it may appear cliche, but prayer works. Before meeting with prospective clients, before the start of an event setup with my team, before accepting a client contract, or signing a vendor contract, prayer is priority. And finally – mentorship is a great asset in my life. Having mentors to act as a sounding board and bounce off ideas with, to ask for advice – sound counsel, helps to solidify my decision-making.
“If you never try, you’ll never know what you’re capable of.” – John Barrow
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Burnout!
Take an intentional break. Establish and enforce boundaries. Make a plan. Give yourself grace.
My advice for avoiding burnout is to make a plan, be intentional, establish and enforce boundaries. For me in the new year, it looks like a calendar for open booking dates, signature event dates, vacation time (time away from the computer and phone altogether) and a reminder about grace. I add the piece about grace because a plan is great, but sometimes things will change – if you’re in the event industry particularly (any professional industry really), you understand how quickly situations may change.
When I first started, I did not even think burnout was a possibility. I just knew I loved the work I was doing and was going to give my absolute best. It wasn’t until I actually experienced burnout that my perspective shifted on the topic. Burnout is pretty serious and can have serious effects on your clientele, if not managed well. I was blessed to have a team to lean on for extra support, while I pushed through my concluding events in the previous year. And now that I’ve taken a much needed break and have outlined a more intentional plan for the new year, I have hit the ground running and exploring new territory for 2023. Stay tuned…
