Meet Sarah Beth Locke

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Beth Locke. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah Beth below.

Hi Sarah Beth, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Trial and error.

I have always known that I wanted to be of service. I didn’t know what that meant, but I knew I wanted to help people in a truly meaningful way.

This desire to serve is ultimately why I decided to attend law school. When I went to law school, I assumed that meant I would be doing litigation. I could see myself fighting for justice in the courtroom. However, once I received my license and started practicing, I realized I was not happy there. I did not feel like I was helping people. It felt like I was too late. The families I represented were already in intense conflict and crisis so, I tried other areas of law. I discovered and fell in love with estate planning by exploring other practice areas.

I realized that I could help keep families together in estate planning by helping them avoid court and conflict entirely. I could provide comfort and guidance during one of the most challenging periods for most people. I felt I could help protect people’s legacy and become a trusted advisor for my clients, and I loved the work I was doing.

Once you find your place in the world and the work you are meant to be doing, you’ll know. I strongly encourage people to explore and be courageous. Do not be afraid to try and fail! Be open to experiencing new things, and find something you love. It is so, so worth it.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner and managing attorney of Every Step Law Group, PLLC. My estate planning firm focuses on asset protection, wealth transfer, and (most importantly) Kids Protection Planning.

At Every Step, we use a heart-centered methodology to give familieis absolute clarity and peace of mind toward the decisions that lead to a life worth living and a legacy worth leaving. My practice begins by looking at your family dynamics, taking inventory of your assets, and then together we can consider the state’s plan for you and the people you love, based on your unique situation.

By facing death in this way, and getting clear on your legal and financial reality, we empower you to make life and death choices with a clarity that may have eluded you and your family in the past.

At Every Step, we call this process Life & Legacy Planning because we don’t just help you choose between a will or trust (though we do that too), but also empower you to take control of your life, clarify your aspirations, and leave a lasting impact that aligns with your values and goals. Most importantly, when you plan with us, your family will have the assurance of knowing your loved ones won’t be left with a mess, and that they will be able to make aligned decisions for you, when needed.

My goal is to become your trusted advisor who helps you make the very best personal, financial, and legal decisions for your family throughout your lifetime. I will guide you now, and then be there for your loved ones when you can’t be, supporting them during a time that could be the most impactful of their lives. In short, my sole focus is to help families stay out of court and conflict in the event of the death or disability of a loved one, and create lives worth living and legacies worth leaving.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Don’t get stuck.

It is so easy to get stuck when starting anything new, like launching a business. I would get so worried about figuring everything out that I wouldn’t move forward. Analysis paralysis is a real thing that people need to be conscious of. When you feel like you aren’t progressing, take a break and work on something else. Set deadlines for your decisions and then stick to them. The important thing is that you keep moving forward toward your ultimate goals.

2. Embrace failures.

You are going to fail, at some point. This is simply the way of life. I encourage you to be gracious with yourself and try to embrace every shortcoming or mistake as a learning experience. Take in the new information you obtain through failure, right your course, and begin again.

3. Find community.

Find your people! Please take the time to surround yourself with people who can mentor and encourage you along your path. Find the community that will help you and push you to keep going and improving.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Balancing all of my responsibilities is an ongoing challenge for me, espeically when trying to grow my business. The sense of overwhelm when looking at my to-do lisit can feel crippling. My primary technique for handling this is time-blocking my calender.

I calender every aspect of my life. When it comes to busniess, timeblocknig my responsibliltes provides me with a sense of control, ensures everything is happening in a timely manner, and provides a sense of relief because I know that I can accompliish everything I need to do. It also allows me to pace myself. I know exactly what I need to accomplish every day and when I have done enough. This really helps me fight off potential burnout.

I also timeblock my personal time and self-care. I think it is so important to make time for yourself, and the best way to ensure that happens for me, is to make sure that I have the time. I strongly belive that time is our most valuable asset, so mastering this portion of your life is crutial and soemthing that I personally am always working on.
