We were lucky to catch up with Suzan Dowdie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Suzan , thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?
During my father’s illness, I gained a deeper understanding of empathy. Seeing him struggle and depend on others made me realize how important it is to be there for him. It taught me to be more patient, understanding, and compassionate, not just with him, but with everyone I meet. My father always shared valuable life lessons, and this experience has become one of the most important ones.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
The Lil Suz Foundation is currently providing support to community members affected by Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall on October 28, 2025, as a Category 5 storm, devastating mostly Western Jamaica. We’re grateful to host those in need and provide relief during this difficult time. As Executive Director of Lil Suz Foundation, I’m humbled to give back and make a difference.
“We Will Rise Again” – a mantra echoing resilience and hope. My father, Junior Dowdie, once said, “One One Cocoa Cocoa Full Basket” – a Jamaican proverb meaning every small contribution adds up. Lil Suz Foundation is proud to make a difference in Giddy Hall, and we’re excited to serve. We’re committed to empowering others and making a positive impact.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, I believe the three qualities that have been most impactful are resilience, empathy, and resourcefulness. Growing up in a low-income household with eight siblings taught me to be resilient and adaptable, which has been crucial in overcoming challenges.
To develop these qualities, focus on self-awareness, seek opportunities to serve others, and be open to learning from challenges. Practice mindfulness and self-reflection to build resilience. Volunteer and engage with your community to cultivate empathy. Be resourceful by seeking mentors, learning new skills, and embracing a growth mindset.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been in leadership and community impact. As a former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant, I’ve developed my platform and passions, and recently partnered with World Central Kitchen, the Miss Universe Jamaica Organization, The Jamaica Defense Force ( JDF), The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) ,and other organizations to support my community after Hurricane Melissa. This experience reinforced my commitment to empowering others through the Lil Suz Foundation.
I’m grateful for those who’ve molded me into the woman I am today. Their trust and belief in me have been my rock, especially over the past 12 months, which have been a roller coaster ride. The challenges we’ve faced, including the category 5 hurricane, have tested my strength, but made me stronger and more determined to shine a light in someone’s darkness.
Currently, we’re focusing on rebuilding community homes and welcome physical donations and help.
