We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebekah Knight a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rebekah, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Realizing that other artists whom I look up to that are highly accomplished were at one time new to the world of art

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a wildlife artist. I create original oil paintings that realistically represent the wild animals and places that we love to experience, as well as create a window into moments that are very seldom seen by humans. The most exciting part about what I do is gathering reference in the form of photos and experiences taken in the wild, then using my creative skills to convey those moments through my art.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Discipline. I would have said determination, but determination is a feeling and does not get you anywhere without the action of discipline. Both go hand-in-hand, but discipline is what makes things happen.
2. Goal-oriented organization. Create a big goal, then set yourself up for success through organizing smaller, more attainable goals that lead to the bigger goal.
3. Make connections. I owe most of my success at this point in my career to the connections I’ve made through art shows and events that I said “yes” to. Sometimes all it takes is one connection to change your life.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
It’s hard to narrow it down to one person, because I have gained valuable knowledge from multiple people throughout my art career. I have taken multiple workshops from various artists whose work I admire, and this has been greatly helpful not only in terms of painting techniques, but also in terms of business and marketing. Sometimes, simply visiting galleries and seeing original paintings by my favorite artists inspires me and ignites the fire I need to stay disciplined in my own work.
