We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Janet Campbell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Janet below.
Janet, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I gained my confidence and self-esteem through my journey which was shaped by my unique background and life experiences. Growing up, I lived in both Puerto Rico and Brooklyn, which allowed me to embrace my multicultural identity and gain perspective on life. The journey didn’t come without challenges since english was my second language.
Despite the language barriers, my mother helped me to learn to believe in myself. She encouraged me to do my best, even when the administrators recommended spanish-speaking classes only, she showed me how to be persistent by demanding I be in english speaking classes, which they allowed. Her unwavering belief in my abilities instilled in me a sense of determination and resilience. Her constant support made me feel like I could overcome any obstacle, which translated into excelling in school and achieving good grades in all subjects.
Unfortunately, a few years ago, my mother passed away from cancer, which deeply impacted me, causing me to become withdrawn from work and my social life. During this challenging time, my Papi reminded me of the strength my mother had shown during her battle with cancer, and his unwavering support and encouragement inspired me to gather the strength to get up and going again.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Not only am I an Interior Designer, I love to sing whenever I can. My friends, family, and husband all nudge whenever a Karaoke session is at hand, even though I can be shy, I get up there and do it. I must give thanks to my dad for the singing bug, when were kids he was the guy who loved to paint, talk about art, play music, sing and of course interior design. This influenced me to embrace the creative side of myself, later on life, it lead me to become an interior designer, where I can be that creative girl like I was when younger.
Current things I’m working on, is 3D renderings to help those who don’t have the time and vision to renovate or space plan. This is where I come in by setting up a discovery call, via Zoom, where I learn about their personal preferences and style, which I then turn into a usable 3D design showing them what their sanctuary within, would look like. They love it, because not only does it look realistic, it saves time, allowing them to effectively shop for the right contractors on a apple to apple abasis.
In addition to the interior design work, my studio and I have come up with a unique line of hard-to-find items to help our clients experience the world of design like I do. Imagine every season delivered directly to your front door a box of uniquely curated interior designer items that reflect the upcoming season, making your space feel cozy and truly your sanctuary within.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I would have to say the following three areas had the biggest impacted me:
1. Financial mortgage specialist. Early in my career I helped hundreds of homeowners buy homes, whether it be their first one, or their last one, none the less it taught me to be patient and listen, because each transaction may of felt the same, but it was unique to the clients.
2. Real estate broker having sold over $150 Million in real estate really gives you an inside look at different ways people build wealth thru real estate, from investors, to flippers, to long term homeownership with second homes in tow.
3. Interior designer. Working with different types of personalities, taught me to listen and pivot when needed. I learned how to include clients in the design process without taking it over, everyone needs to be heard and know that can contribute in one way or another, if they wish to.
4. 3d Design – This is where I challenged myself to learn something outside of my comfort zone, and in doing so, I realized I have a natural knack for it. Doing 3D design, opens my creative mind, allowing me to laser focus on creating a space that comes to life and wow my clients.
All these experiences and lessons shaped me into who I am today, a smart, caring and creative interior designer.
My advice for those who are just starting their journey, be mindful of what you learn, and learn from your experiences, if the outcome is not what you expect, examine your methods and make changes, it’s the best way to grow as a person and professionally.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is the busy executive who wants to re-do their space but just lacks the time to do so. They need someone they can trust, who has the experience, and most importantly the vision.
This works for because i know tine is the most precious thing we all own, and to hire me, is their best way of preserving their time. I’m a believer in technology and use it to accommodate my clients, whether it be thru Zoom, client relationship platforms, and or text messages.
