Meet Sierra Thorne

We recently connected with Sierra Thorne and have shared our conversation below.

Sierra, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
I find that in every industry, you will have people that encourage you and people that aren’t as supportive. Since photography is a self employed profession, I had many people warn me to have a backup plan, just get a college degree “just in case.” While I did end up getting my degree in elementary education, I realized as soon as starting that, that career was not for me. My heart was always tugging me back to photography and I knew if I let people talk me out of it, it would never become more than a dream. I stuck with my gut and followed my passion and let the unsupportive peoples’ comments go in one ear and out the other.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a couple and wedding photographer based in Tampa, Florida. Being a photographer has always been a dream of mine and I feel the rush of excitement every time I get behind the camera. I love all things romantic, so being able to tell your love story through pictures makes me so happy. My photography is very based on storytelling. Rather than the uncomfortable, awkward posing, I focus on the interactions between a couple that captures the genuine, raw emotions. My goal is for you to look back on the images and FEEL what it was like in that moment.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that have been most impactful in my photography career is being personable, self- motivating, and adaptive. I used to be such an introvert, but realized I would come out of my shell and was able to be outgoing and personable at photoshoots. This is huge when it comes to making your clients feel comfortable. Think of them like a close friend and ask questions about them to fet conversation going. I have always been self motivated, but my biggest piece of advice to obtain this quality is to start with small, achievable goals and be proud of yourself when achieving them. Hold yourself accountable and focus on this quality when you go full time. It takes you to keep your business going, so if you aren’t motivated, your business will suffer. Lastly, be adaptive. Your schedule will be flexible. You may be shooting a wedding and everything is running behind schedule, the best thing you can do is adapt and remain calm to keep your client calm as well!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am such a believer in community over competition. Some of my favorite vendors to collaborate with are any and all wedding vendors, venues, florists, bakers, brands, etc. I love seeing other businesses flourish and getting to put creative minds together!
