Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stoney Doom. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stoney, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
As Stoners in Kansas, we’re used to the taunts and the jokes that Kansas will be the last state to legalize Cannabis (if ever). But we won’t let that pessimism deter us from hyping up the masses and rallying together all the support we can get to finally push for the change we all deserve. There is still a lot of work to be done – a lot of myths to dispel, and a lot of information and resources to be shared.
Cannabis prohibition began almost 100 years ago. Even after all this time, we are still fighting to get that personal freedom back – All while crisis from addiction and health issues run rampant with substances such as alcohol, nicotine, and opioids, which are not outlawed. As a musical artist with an extremely controversial political/social agenda, we are constantly faced with challenges and censorship. The online and social media networks continue to be quite restrictive of content related to “illegal substance use”, despite the fact that support for Cannabis law reform continues to increase across the country.
So far in our journey, we have been very satisfied and surprised by the growing number of people who have expressed interest and/or support for our cause and our message. We intend to continue implementing as many creative tactics as we can, to further spread our message and our cause. We hope to face our obstacles with strength and perseverance as we strive for the end of Cannabis prohibition. FREE THE LEAF!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Stoney-Doom is a Kansas-based music project advocating for Cannabis legalization. This group was created as a means of musical experimentation and creative expression. This project aims to embody several different subgenres such as Sludge, Progressive Metal, Stoner Rock & Doom Metal. With its weed-themed antics, Stoney-Doom falls in the same Stoner/Doom groups as bands like Sleep, Stoned Jesus, Weedeater, Rezn, and Dopelord. In less than a year as active performers, the band has already fulfilled opportunities to play shows with notable bands such as Bongzilla, Kottonmouth Kings, and Radkey.
Lyrical themes include medical benefits, government overreach, and the realities of Cannabis use. Although the themes are fairly serious, the message is meant to be conveyed in a fun, engaging, humorous and witty way. All of the creative contributors that have had a part in this project have been credited for using satirical pseudonyms to protect their privacy and keep the focus on the bigger message… Legalize Cannabis!
Advocating for Legal Cannabis means being honest and transparent about the realities of the substance and its use. Sometimes, factors such as setting, mood, and even strain can negatively impact our experience with unwanted side effects like anxiety and paranoia. While this is not always avoidable, steps such as proper education and a comforting environment can help you to guide and better control your experience. One of our big goals is to create a community and environment for likeminded people to be free and safe to speak openly and honestly with one another. We wish to foster a future where Cannabis is accepted across the board – whether it’s politically, medically, socially, or so on.
We have a ton of plans and ideas in motion to continue expanding our reach and growing our support base, and we are constantly stirring up new creative ideas. One of our big upcoming projects will be hosting our very own, very first Pro-Cannabis festival in Manhattan, Kansas, in which we will have several live music acts, vendors, and even speakers who all wish to come together in support of Cannabis law reform and to encourage a Pro-Cannabis community, starting with the THOUSANDS of people in our home state of Kansas alone that could benefit from Cannabis legalization – not to mention the many more people who deserve to be released from prison and/or have records expunged for non-violent Cannabis-related criminal charges.
In the coming year, we also hope to finish writing and recording some more new music, and we are hoping to expand our physical presence by playing some shows/events a bit further out in our region, as we recently invested in a band van. We would especially like to potentially play in many or all of the other states like Kansas who have yet to legalize Cannabis Recreationally and/or even Medically! We will see where our Journey takes us, and we encourage any likeminded people to reach out to us to provide support or additional resources.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Passion – Discovering the things that we are passionate about and being able to form relationships with likeminded people feels like the very basis of any journey. Through both personal exploration and forming a social network, we are able to fuel the fires that are our passions.
Exploration –
Being open-minded, trying new things, and being willing to fail and try again are all key characteristics to be able to find the things that drive us the most, or make us feel happy or satisfied. The people in our families and social circles are always a natural influence on our interests and passions, but being willing to explore even further into things that we’re not always entirely sure that we will enjoy or not is a powerful asset in striving to find the best version of ourselves.
Persistence –
The key! We don’t believe people are truly born with talents… they are adapted and refined over time! Greatness (almost) never happens overnight… Rome wasn’t built in a day… Blah blah blah!
You know the speech… GET BACK TO GRINDING!!!
I sound like a fitness instructor haha… but seriously, go smoke a bowl or whatever floats your goat, and live life fully to your own satisfaction! You shouldn’t have to take static from ignorant and negative people. Shut that noise out and walk your own path! Do what makes you happy as much as you possibly can, and never stop celebrating and fighting for the things that make you passionate. Live & Let Live! Peace Out…
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We are always looking to collaborate with just about anyone and everyone! NO JOKE! Fellow musicians, stoners, supports, creatives… activists, advocates, influencers, business owners, politicians… heck, even law enforcement! We truly want to create an open an honest community, and we believe there exists a possible future Cannabis is accepted for the many various benefits and uses the plant has to offer.
We invite literally anyone and everyone to flood our inbox and come talk our heads off! Even if you think you’re just an “Average Joe” or “Average Jane”, we would be open to anything you might have to share or contribute – ideas, advice, tips, criticism… Come tell us you disagree with us! We’ll entertain that conversation!
Google us, email us, holler and shout for us… we’re “HIGH”ly accessible and ready to grow our circle!
