We recently had the chance to connect with Adriano Ávila, graphic designer and founder of Futbox and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Adriano, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
They’re quite privileged, since I’ve been working from home for over 20 years. I start with a glass of water, then a sugar-free coffee with a little bread roll and butter, along with some Minas Gerais cheese — all in the best company in the world: my dear wife.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Adriano Ávila, and I’m the founder of Futbox.com – The Graphic Research Center on Football, based in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Over more than 30 years, Futbox has built the world’s largest collection of football illustrations, available in three languages. We develop projects in branding, history, marketing, design, and innovation for clubs, brands, agencies, festivals, and sponsors in the sports market, with a strong focus on football. In addition to the content published on our Portal, Blog, and social media, I also write articles on the areas mentioned above. Futbox link for reference: https://linktr.ee/futbox_projects
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
That’s a great question. The founder and creator of Futbox is a role I’ve already moved on from. My focus now is on sharing what I’ve learned, thought, created, and continue to develop in relation to the world of football — both on the pitch and, more importantly, off it. This includes issues such as the management of football club brands, the need to better qualify executives, and the importance and responsibility of clubs as agents of social transformation through sport. At the same time, it means holding governments accountable for their role in this context. It also involves debating and challenging the subordination of human beings to technology, which should be understood as a tool, not an end in itself. True innovation lies in behavior — in how we see life, how we relate to the world around us, and how we connect with the people near us.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, sometimes. But it’s important to know the difference between perseverance and stubbornness. Following the heart is better than reason, when we have that choice. Regret only exists when we choose reason.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
A fad is when only a few profit greatly. Real change happens when many can create their own personality.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Rescuing the past means preserving our present for future generations.
