Amber Lee on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Amber Lee and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Amber, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
Our Select Date Society clients live big, full lives and have achieved success at a high level. Many of our clients are public figures that others look at as “having it all.” I’ve learned that no matter how accomplished they are, they still crave what we’re all looking for – the person we get to enjoy life with.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the Co-Founder of Select Date Society, a high-end matchmaking firm representing high-net-worth singles globally. Sandra Myers and I co-founded SDS after we had each spent over two decades in the matchmaking industry. We realized that the industry had become saturated with dating services and matchmakers who simply didn’t put the care and concern into delivering results for their clients, and we knew that we could do matchmaking at a higher level. We founded Select Date Society in 2020 and we have had incredible success! We are a boutique firm and we only take on clients who we are confident in representing. Our discernment in only taking on the right clients has had a direct impact on the results we’re able to achieve for our clients.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with my husband has most shaped how I see myself. From the moment we met in 2010, Mike has been my biggest supporter. I could have never stepped into entrepreneurship without his encouragement and belief in me. Whenever I face a challenge, Mike reminds me of how far I’ve come and eases any doubts and fears that I have, reminding me of my strength and ability to make things happen. My own marriage has shown me the importance of finding the right partner.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I once heard that the thing holding most would-be-entrepreneurs back is a steady paycheck, and that absolutely held me back for years. The fear of letting go of “stability” made it scary to take the leap into entrepreneurship. I was earning a good living doing work that I enjoyed, and I was afraid of letting go of that and stepping into the unknown. In 2020, I suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest and nearly lost my life. That was the push I needed from the universe to push past the fear and step into my purpose.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I see a lot of smart people get the way that love happens wrong. They think that they can optimize for love and spend time analyzing and dissecting potential matches without ever getting in front of people in real life. The truth is that love happens in your heart, not in your head! There is so much about connection that cannot be explained. Sometimes two people fall in love and it’s a connection that no one would have ever predicted, but when those people were in front of each other something clicked. So many smart people miss out on finding their person because they are overthinking and getting in their own way.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
Love would remain and that truly is the most important thing in life… the love of my family, friends, my husband, and my daughter.
