Amy Davis on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Amy Davis shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Amy, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity above all else!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Amy Davis, and I’m a registered dietitian based in New Orleans. I’ve been a solopreneur for a little over a year, where I’m focused on nutrition communications and education with the goal of making a healthy lifestyle approachable, simple, and even fun! This includes writing, recipe development, local TV segments, and consulting with different better-for-you food brands and organizations.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Up until recently, I’ve always believed I needed to prove myself and reach certain goals in order to be “good enough.” Excelling in school and work, earning money, looking a certain way, or being a perfect partner. But that isn’t true! We are all inherently enough and worthy of love just as we are. Goals and aspirations are wonderful, but reaching them is not what makes us worthy of love and acceptance – being human does.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be to trust yourself and that everything you need is already within you. So often, we look for external opinions or validation for various decisions or situations. And while it’s great to have wise counsel and trustworthy people to talk to, most of the time your gut tells you everything you need to know. I’ve spent so much time going back and forth on decisions, like whether or not to end a relationship, leave a job, or pursue a new work opportunity. But I always know deep down what the answer is once I quiet the noise and trust my own intuition. And my gut has never led me astray.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The wellness industry has grown immensely over the years, but sadly so has the amount of misinformation that goes along with it. Specifically, an extreme or all-or-nothing mindset when it comes to diet and nutrition. With diets ranging from vegan to carnivore, and influencers deeming certain ingredients like seed oils toxic, the wellness industry has become unreliable, expensive, and unsustainable. But the magic is almost always in the middle. I believe a healthy lifestyle is truly attainable for anyone, but we also have to meet people where they are in their health journeys. Lasting change doesn’t happen overnight, and building healthy (evidence-based!) nutrition habits over time, while still enjoying life, is key to a sustainable lifestyle that supports your health.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What pain do you resist facing directly?
Being vulnerable is difficult for me! There is definitely a level of fear when it comes to showing my deepest thoughts, fears, and beliefs, then being criticized or not supported for it. However, any time I have shared more vulnerable parts of myself and my life, it’s always been met with tons of love. Which is a great reminder for all of us to get vulnerable more often!
