Amy Hawkins shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Amy, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One of the things that I think that is most misunderstood about my business is that cabinetry is all built the same. Clients often believe that the “higher quality” cabinetry a client can buy at a big box store is just as good as custom cabinetry, but at a cost savings. Not until a client learns how custom cabinetry is constructed, the quality of the materials used, and the craftsmanship that goes into creating custom cabinetry, does the client then understand the benefits of utilizing custom cabinetry in their home.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Amy Hawkins and I am the owner of HSD Services. HSD Services specializes in custom cabinetry, catering to both commercial and residential spaces. Our cabinetry is built by local Amish craftsmen with endless options for wood species, door styles, finishes and colors. Our ability to create beautiful cabinetry goes far beyond Pinterest-worthy kitchen cabinets and bath vanities. Custom hoods, wine rooms, bars, walk-in closets and islands are just a few of the types of projects where our custom cabinetry shines.
Recently, we have started to work directly with builders and designers to supply them with private label branded cabinetry. This offers an opportunity for the builder or designer’s logo to be added directly into the cabinetry, so long after the project is completed, their brand remains.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work was my father. I grew up helping my dad on house flips and renovation projects. I learned early on that if you can do something yourself, versus paying someone else to do it for you, you can save a lot of money. But that also taught me so much about work ethic, and dreaming big, and creating something from nothing.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one thing to my younger myself it would be that everything always turns out ok in the end. There have been so many times in my life where life just throws a curveball and I thought (at the time) that I wouldn’t make it through. But I did, and it always turns out better and I come out stronger than before.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
A belief that I used to hold tightly that I now think is naive/wrong is that I can do it all, alone. The truth is, I can’t. I am fiercely independent and I have learned that I can’t do it all on my own! Building a business from the ground up has been such a beautiful experience and has taught me so much about relaxing the grip on doing it all myself.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
What I understand deeply that most people don’t is that all we have is this one crazy life. So do what makes you happy. Take the trip, build the business, tell the people you love that you love them. Life is short and tomorrow is never promised.
