An Inspired Chat with Angie Dunn of Virginia

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Angie Dunn. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Angie, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me is jam packed with work. Constantly on calls trying to onboard my agents or speaking with my clients giving them financial advice. On top of that I like to stay busy on the social media side of things. Based on life right now my motto feels like, “Eat, sleep, breathe, work”.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, I am Angie Dunn, the founder and owner of Angie Dunn Financial and Dunn Benefits Solutions. Growing up, I experienced a multitude of hardships as a child. I come from a working-class family that did not have a lot of education and surely did not understand how to budget or save for retirement. When I was creating my business, I wanted to really make a difference in someone’s life, not knowing I would end up years later reaching people all over America. I have had the amazing opportunity to share my story and connect with all kinds of people from different backgrounds. I would not have been able to provide old-school, one-on-one customer service if I were working under a big corporation. No one should be seen as a number, and it seems the big companies have relied too heavily on computer-operated calling systems. I want to bring back the real customer service times where you get to know the person you are speaking to.

As the founder of Angie Dunn Financial and Dunn Benefits Solutions, I’ve built these companies dedicated to helping families safeguard their retirement, protect their 401(k)s, build lasting legacies, and secure their finances. Beyond serving clients, I’m passionate about empowering the next generation of financial professionals. I mentor and equip motivated agents with the tools, training, and support they need to create meaningful and rewarding careers.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Growing up, I had to face the reality that I was born into a low-income family. I noticed that most of my friends had their parents waiting with them for the school bus, while at the same time I was walking onto the bus as my mom was already hours into her shift.

I grew up in a household where my mother worked harder than anyone, yet still struggled to make ends meet. She faced choices no parent should have to make: Do I pay the light bill, or do I buy a few groceries?

As a child, I witnessed people working hard for their money, and I wanted to change that narrative by educating anyone who would listen. Now, I am a true believer that you can make your money work for you—no matter the size of the income going into your pocket.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I believe that both success and failure are empowering. With the right mindset, each has the ability to shape you into a better person.

I learned what suffering truly meant at a young age. Growing up in a lower-class family forced me to face reality sooner than most.

My life has been full of ups and downs, with periods of suffering in between. Too often, people glorify success while shaming the idea of struggle.

But I’ve learned that through suffering comes growth—and that everything can get better if you truly want it to. Change requires effort, determination, and the willingness to pursue your goals. That is what has led to my success. Without the lessons suffering has taught me, I would not be able to fully appreciate the success I have today.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I believe that one of the most valuable things in a business is having employees who are genuine. Being your true self—whether online or in face-to-face meetings—sets you apart from other businesses. On top of that, it builds rapport with your clients and audience.

When I go online, I invite viewers to experience all sides of me—whether it’s the professional side where I offer advice, keeping it real by showing the unorganized parts of my life, the reality of being a business owner, or letting my personality shine through with some sassy Southern humor.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I was always willing to help anyone who asked. My passion for my career and for providing genuine customer service was evident in the way I took time to truly get to know my clients.

I want to help people secure their finances, no matter their background. To accomplish this, I take a down-to-earth approach—speaking with my clients in a clear and simple way so that anyone can understand.
