We recently had the chance to connect with Anjala B and have shared our conversation below.
Anjala, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I will start by saying – I am an empath, to a fault sometimes, honestly. I am also extremely observant. With that being said, something I believe some people are secretly struggling with is being confident and secure in who they truly are, although they might not ever admit it. I am currently residing in Portland, Oregon, where the coined motto is “Keep Portland Weird.” I find that extremely inspiring because I get to experience seeing everyone I encounter be themselves, unapologetically. On the other hand, when I see my peers in other places navigating the world, it seems as though they are trying to fit into a mold curated by people who are not them and will never understand what makes them so special and unique. It is truly my hope that everyone looks deeper within themselves and own who they are securely and confidently, because they absolutely should.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello all! My name is Anjala (like Angela). I also go by Anj or Anji. I am the founder and owner of Anj Essentials Co. Our company’s mission is to create hair, beard, and skin care products using natural methods, that can be used in people’s daily routines as natural alternatives to products available on the general market. I would like to emphasize that our products are all carefully and naturally handmade with our sensitive skinned, curly haired, and breaded friends in mind.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Not to sound like a preacher or anything, but the only being that saw me clearly before I could see myself was God. No one told me that I would see life so differently once my frontal lobe fully developed. It was crazy finally noticing myself, the things I like or dislike, the things I love, and things I regret. Thankfully I built a strong spiritual relationship with the higher power and the more I got to know the one who made me, the more I understood what makes me. My vision has been pretty clear ever since.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Oh, to be able to speak to my younger self. I would be so emotional, it might not come out. But if I could, I would tell her that she won’t be looked past forever. She won’t be talked over forever. She won’t always be passive. She won’t always be a people-pleaser. The hard days will pass before you know it beloved. Keep your heart kind. Continue being patient. Keep your self-control. Love always. Remain joyful. All the good things you have sown will be reaped beyond your wildest imagination. God keeps His promises, I promise! I would have to also make sure to tell her I love her. There were many days she questioned that, so I’d make sure to give her that reassurance.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely! I don’t know how to be anybody else but myself. People who know me have most likely heard me say “I cannot be fake.” And I mean that whole-heartedly. I’m not sure what the creator placed in me that made me this way, but I am eternally grateful for it.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
It is interesting to think about people’s thoughts about me when I am no longer here. You can never know what people really feel about you unless they tell you. However, It is my hope that their words express how they felt my kindness, felt loved, helped and cared for. I can only hope my character will speak for me and my time here. Moreover, I hope the prayers I called out for everyone I love, and will love eventually, leave seeds that harvest the most beautiful fruit.
