An Inspired Chat with Anthony Cally

Anthony Cally shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Anthony, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Right now it involves a lot of caffeine and libraries! Was recently hired to write a feature so the day job is writing. Split between libraries and my own home desk. It’s nice to change the location of work, keeps my mind fresh.

My co-writer and I just came back from a trip to Texas to learn more about this story we were hired for. So keeping all those details and notes alive requires a lot of table space.

If I fizzle out for any reason I shift gears and continue the post work for a short film I’m doing called “Deeper, Darker, Longing.”

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Anthony and a director/producer for my production company, “wandering winds”. Whether it be music videos, shorts, or social media content, our aim is to make the story incredibly personal for the clients we have. We want to bring feature level story-telling to short form work.

When not working on those, I’m a freelance VFX production manager. Working on features for universal, netflix and apple have taught me how to bring those pipelines to my nuclear team.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Since I’m in the entertainment biz I’ll keep it about movies. I remember renting “Ikiru” by Akira Kurosawa. This must’ve been in middle school when Netflix used to mail the dvd’s to your house.

Being used to see his samurai films ( Seven Samurai, Yojimbo), I was curious what it would be like to see a contemporary story of his. And man did I not know what I signed up for.

For anyone who may not know, the story follows a dull bureaucrat who gets a cancer diagnosis. And from there he has to decide what to do with his remaining time on earth.

I’ve found it incredibly moving and with having so many cancer scares, battles, and death in my own family it hits home. The last shot of our protagonist is a tracking shot through a jungle gym or monkey bars, creating this vast network of connections and webs around our main character. To me, very much reflecting on how much one person and action can affect others and the interconnectedness we all have to each other (whether we are aware of it or not).

I am hard pressed to think of a better master of the film craft than Akira Kurosawa. The best teacher I’ve never met.

To wherever his essence or soul (whatever you call it) may be, thank you.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
I think music was the best medicine. My favorite band my whole life has always been The Beatles. And lots of their individual solo work. I’ve always found them to be up lifting. Probably focusing on the “Hey Jude” and “Dear Prudence” over “Helter Skelter” and “Sexy Sadie” if I was sad.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I always like seeing my projects to the end. I think my feature film “Love and Love Not” was probably the longest project I’ve been on. From writing it, to production, to selling and distribution… It was about a three year process. You can find it now on amazon, tubi and fandango at home.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
i would stop waiting and start prioritizing booking every trip i’ve ever wanted to do. Lots of the planet I haven’t been to yet and the little i have seen has brought me a lot of joy.
