Hi Calli, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes! Some dear clients of mine made me laugh by giving me a funny gift, I was proud they knew me so well. My love for weenie dogs had left an impression. The gift is a door mat with a dachshund on it that reads “sorry if you trip over my wiener.” It’s a good feeling to share a laugh with someone and feel proud that they thought of me. I cherish and proudly display the collection of dachshund and non-dachshund related gifts and cards I’ve been given from my generous and thoughtful clients.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Calli Loskill, tattoo artist and owner of Human Nature Art and Tattoo. I started my career as the first woman tattoo artist licensed in Jefferson City, MO. Since opening my business in 2023 I am now the first woman to own a tattoo studio and place in Jefferson City’s Readers Choice Awards 2024 and City’s Best 2025. My intent is to offer stress-free tattoo experiences, a creative and compassionate process and lifetime guarantee. I also accept fine art commissions and offer experience in a variety of mediums.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of my earliest memories of feeling powerful also taught me a lesson about self-awareness. When I was a young child my neighbor, also my classmate, came to me asking for help with a bully. This memory is so early that it’s incomplete. I don’t remember why she was bullied or what I did to help. I think of Maya Angelou’s famous quote, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Without realizing, I made my neighbor feel she could trust me to ask for help and to take action. I will always remember how she made me feel powerful and aware of my potential to positively influence others.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
The kindest advice I could give to my younger self would be a reminder that curiosity creates inspiration. I would tell my younger self it’s worth the struggle to explore, not get comfortable, try different things, and learn from different people because facing the unknown will show us who we are. I would kindly tell my young self how capable we are and what significant art comes from knowing ourselves.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, it’s the real me but not the only version. I think it’s natural to have different versions or to adapt to different situations. I am very curious about other people and I enjoy conversations. In public I’m friendly and outgoing, which is natural and intentional. The private version of me is quiet, reserved and focused more on myself. I feel both are real, genuine sides of myself needed to keep balance and stay focused on the moment.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I hope they would miss the art, the company, the humanity and maybe even the humor! I try to create a fun and stress-free experience. I want my clients to enjoy their art as well as the memory of getting it. I intend for my clients to feel at ease knowing if they need anything they can reach out to me. I know if I retire tomorrow I would miss hearing from clients, providing them with a place they feel safe and trust whatever they need related to tattoos or art they can share with me. I would miss my clients sharing what they find funny (dachshund or non-dachshund related), tattoo inspiration or motivation, questions about healing or process, their own personal art or what they love about art and tattoos.
