An Inspired Chat with Cindy Bickman of Marietta, Georgia

Cindy Bickman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Cindy, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
This summer has been the adventure of a lifetime! For almost 50 years, my gymnastics team has travelled the world spreading the message of INCLUSION. In June, 70 Chattooga team members joined another 70 international gymnasts to perform in the International Gala at the Turnfest in Leipzig, Germany. The team ranged in age from 18 months to 75 years, with and without disabilities. Four families had 3 generations performing. A definite proud coach moment – we were the only team who got a standing ovation at every performance!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
HI! I’m Cindy Bickman. I’ve been the owner & director of Chattooga School of Gymnastics & Dance in Marietta, Georgia, since 1976. I also coach the Cobb County Special Olympics Gymnastics team. At Chattooga, all gymnasts from the elite level to athletes in wheelchairs train & perform together. Parents & grandparents join in too. Our motto is One Team, One Dream. We travel the world showing the abilities of gymnasts with disABILITIES, and the possibilities of people of all ages working together to create an inclusive performance.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I grew up in a very supportive family and was introduced to dance & gymnastics from an early age. My parents, teachers & coaches always found ways for me to be successful, even though I was never the most talented girl on the team. That’s what I want for everyone I coach. For the past 50 years, at Chattooga, my students have taught me what it means to be a leader & mentor. They have taught me to appreciate & recognize that everyone has a special gift.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
NO! I have been fortunate to live a life full of blessings. Doors have always opened when I needed another direction to go.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They would say that I am on this earth to provide opportunities for people of all ages & abilities to shine.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I know people will say that I love purple & hate pink! I hope they don’t tell the story of what it has been like for them to experience Chattooga & INCLUSION. I hope they live the story & keep spreading the word.
